IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Having abundant wealth allows access to many amenities without worrying about prices. However, some people believe that having plenty of money makes you capable of helping people and one should utilize that ability. I largely agree with notion of utilizing money for the welfare of fellow humans, but it isn't the only important thing.
There are several reasons why people advocate helping humans when one achieves a higher bank balance. First and foremost, it is thought to be a moral obligation to uplift others when you receive abundant resources. Even after spending money on various expenditures, wealthy people have an exponentially large amount of money with them. Using a proportion of it to benefit someone is like taking a drop from the ocean. It is also associated with religious beliefs, where sharing and helping humans is the highest virtue, and the more you share, the more you acquire. For instance, Islam has the concept of Zakat, where a part of your income is used for humanitarian purposes. Similarly, Hinduism promotes donation. Wealthy people such as Ambani and TATA Birla often donate a part of their money for social causes.
However, helping others isn't the only important thing when you become rich. One often uses it to fulfill their long-standing dreams. You can travel throughout the world, meet new people, and explore different stories. When people become rich after years of struggle and hard work, the first thing they do is buy a home and a car. Later, they help their family members and invest in a secure path. Finally, comes the stage of helping people because if your wishes aren't fulfilled and your inner soul isn't content, helping others could never bring a sense of satisfaction.
Therefore, rich people should prioritize both themselves and helping others. If you are capable enough, working and investing in social causes becomes one of your moral responsibilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. The response is well-developed, acknowledging that while philanthropy is a moral obligation tied to religious and social beliefs, personal fulfillment and achieving long-standing dreams are also vital. The student presents relevant ideas, such as mentioning Zakat in Islam and examples like Ambani and Tata Birla, extending these arguments logically to support the nuanced stance that rich people should prioritize both personal goals and social causes. The overall development fits well within the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The introduction establishes the writer's stance, body paragraphs are logically sequenced around distinct themes (reasons for helping others versus personal fulfillment), and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "First and foremost," "Similarly," and "However," ensuring smooth transitions between ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different facets of the argument. While cohesion is generally clear and effective, minor mechanical referencing prevents it from reaching the highest bands, placing it solidly at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing less common items such as "abundant wealth," "moral obligation," "humanitarian purposes," and "inner soul isn't content." There are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as missing an article in "agree with notion" or using "exponentially large amount of money" rather than more standard phrasing, but these do not impede communication. The lexical control is adequate for a Band 6.5 to 7.0, and the variety used is commendable for addressing a general abstract topic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional structures, relative clauses, and participial phrases (e.g., "When people become rich after years of struggle and hard work..."). There are some grammatical errors and missing articles, such as "agree with notion" instead of "agree with the notion" and "fulfill their long-standing dreams" contrasting with "fulfill their" referring back to "one" earlier in the text. However, these errors do not impede communication and a frequent number of sentences remain error-free. This performance aligns comfortably with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 criteria.
