IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is been argued that the most improtant thing about being money is that one has the opportunity to help others, I totally agreed with this statment because being rich means you have money and you can help other people that are in desperate need for money like paying medical bills, etc.

In this modren world money is everything because money can buy you anythIng you want and also you can help people in need . In this world everything cost money like people need mony for buying thier childrens cloths, buying them gifts, paying their school fee,and paying bills etc. So in this world money is so improtant that nobody can denied it and most improtant thing about having money you can help people pay thier bills, help them in emergency. In this world having money means you have power in our hand and you can use it to help other in need .Having money means you have a healthy opportunity to help other it gives you power to do so,If you want .

There is also a disagreement on money that to help other you have to have a heart that breaths to help other. Having money doesnot means you will automaticly help others it doesnot guarantee that. As human we have a natural attraction toward greed, once a person have money he will expliots his own people and he will want more and more power to make himself superior of others.

In the end, I conclude this topic by saying that having money gives us the power to help others but it doesnot give a heart to person to help other in need, you have to have heart that want to help others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing with the statement that the primary benefit of wealth is helping others. The main ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations, such as paying medical bills, school fees, and daily necessities. The counter-argument acknowledging that wealth does not automatically create a benevolent heart is also included. However, the development of ideas tends to be repetitive, relying on similar concepts rather than expanding into deeper sociological or economic arguments. Therefore, the response aligns best with Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance and distinct paragraphing. However, cohesion is often faulty and mechanical. There is an over-reliance on basic conjunctions like 'and', and run-on sentences are common due to comma splices, such as in 'I totally agreed with this statment because being rich means you have money and you can help other people'. Paragraph transitions are simplistic, and referencing is occasionally unclear. These features represent Band 5 for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with frequent misspellings and word-choice errors, such as 'improtant', 'modren', 'statment', 'monry', and 'expliots'. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'superior' and 'desperate need', but spelling and morphological inaccuracies are noticeable throughout the text. While the range is adequate to convey basic ideas, the constant lexical errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in punctuation, article usage, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency, such as 'It is been argued', 'nobody can denied it', and 'Having money doesnot means'. Complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to run-on sentences that lack proper subordination. Because errors are frequent and sometimes impede smooth reading, the writing achieves a Band 5 for grammatical range and accuracy.
