IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

some individuals admit that most important thing about being rich that person has the chance to help others. I definitely agree with the thought because a person with the money and other essential resourses should help others in need. In my opinion the wealthy person has the social responsibility of helping the poor. I will furthur discuss my opinion and reasons on this in the essay.

In this contemporary world, everyone is only focused on how much money they can earn. The reason is so simple. Money can ultimately solve lot of problems. Money can get you out of certain situations like emergency medical situations. The person who is rich or has a lot of wealth has the opportunity to support the person in need. However, some individuals ignore these chances and only focus on how they can make more money. These people are commomly called selfish.

On the other hand, some wealthy people support communities. Some start NGO's to help poor students, Older people , widowed women. So many rich people have the opportunity to contribute to the communities where they came from. For example, in the name of Ratan Tata there are so many NGO's wroking to help people who are in need. Wealthy people know the importance of the money more than anyone. They should teach people the importance of financial freedom. Additionally, not only through money but they can help through knowledge they have of diverse subjects.

In conclusion, i think rich people have the moral responsibility to help others in many sections they have experties in. Starting NGO's to starting old age homes to support poor students and old people. Educating individuals about morality, financial stability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt directly, establishing a clear position in the introduction that wealthy individuals have a social and moral responsibility to help others. The writer attempts to support this viewpoint by discussing how money solves problems and by providing examples of philanthropy, such as the mention of Ratan Tata and starting NGOs. However, the ideas are somewhat repetitive and under-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs where points about financial freedom and sharing knowledge are introduced abruptly without sufficient expansion. The conclusion is also quite fragmented, reading more like a list of examples rather than a cohesive summary of arguments. Consequently, the response fits the Band 6 descriptor well, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, but some points lack full development and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disrupted by mechanical referencing and abrupt transitions. For instance, the transition into the final paragraph ('In conclusion, i think rich people...') lacks a smooth grammatical connection to the preceding text, and the final sentence is an incomplete fragment. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or repetitively (e.g., the repeated use of 'some individuals' and 'some wealthy people'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved to ensure a smoother flow of ideas. These features place the response firmly at Band 5.5 to 6.0; awarded a 6.0 for overall logical structure despite minor mechanical flaws.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'contemporary world', 'financial freedom', 'moral responsibility', and 'diverse subjects'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'resourses' instead of resources, 'furthur' instead of further, 'lot of problems' missing an article ('a lot of'), 'commomly' instead of commonly, 'NGO's' with incorrect apostrophe usage, and 'wroking' instead of working. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5 or 6.0. Because the vocabulary is adequate to convey the central meaning despite the inaccuracies, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'The person who is rich or has a lot of wealth has the opportunity...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent missing articles ('most important thing', 'with money', 'in name of'), punctuation errors, and capitalization issues (e.g., lowercase 'i' at the beginning of the conclusion). Furthermore, some sentences are structurally incomplete or ungrammatical, particularly in the final paragraph ('Starting NGO's to starting old age homes...'). Despite these recurring errors, communication is rarely impeded as the intended meaning generally shines through. This balance of a mixed structural range alongside frequent non-systematic errors aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
