IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some proportion of the people say that the most pivotal thing regarding being wealthy is that one has the opportunity to help others. I strongly agree with this stance that rich people can provide assistance to improve financial and employment conditions, of individuals who belong to the impoverished background, although, I believe that financial wealth is not the only source of helping others.

One of the major reasons that influences the majority of the population to support this concept is that rich people can have more resources to support others such as creating jobs, helping poor families, funding education or healthcare, donating money to charity or even supporting community welfare projects. A clear illustration of this is provided by new entrepreneurs who are spending more of their money in donation activities and supporting welfare projects for the needy people, as they are able to support others because of their financial wealth.

Conversely, some rich people are not willing to help others, as they want to save their wealth for their upcoming generations. For instance, the conditions of the people of developing countries have not improved for many years, despite having wealthy individuals in their society.

Although rich people have great opportunities to help others, I largely agree with that having financial resources is not the only source of supporting others. Many people help others by encouraging and motivating them to work hard with great efforts to improve their circumstances.

Overall, according to some people rich people are more beneficial as they have more resources to support others, while from my perspective, wealthy people can help needy ones. However, it is not the sole source of helping others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout. In the introduction, you state that you strongly agree rich people can help others, while introducing a nuanced caveat that wealth is not the sole source of assistance. Your body paragraphs develop this position well, citing examples such as entrepreneurs funding education, healthcare, and welfare projects. However, the third paragraph introduces a counterpoint about wealthy individuals saving for future generations, which slightly blurs the focus of your main argument, and the conclusion is somewhat repetitive. Overall, your ideas are extended and supported, aligning with the Band 7 descriptor for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with an introduction, moving to supporting arguments and counterarguments, and ending with a summary conclusion. You make use of cohesive devices such as 'One of the major reasons', 'Conversely', and 'Although', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'helping others' and 'support others'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly through your arguments. This performance is consistent with the Band 7 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. You attempt less common lexical items such as 'pivotal thing', 'impoverished background', and 'welfare projects'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'Some proportion of the people say' (instead of 'Some people say') and 'spending more of their money in donation activities' (instead of 'on charitable donations'). While communication is never impeded, these occasional slips prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Your range is sufficient to earn a solid Band 6.5 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You successfully utilise a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses ('although, I believe that...', 'as they are able to support...'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'conditions of the individuals who belong to the impoverished background' (unnecessary article 'the') and 'largely agree with that having financial resources' (preposition error). However, these errors do not impede communication, and you maintain good control over basic punctuation and sentence structures. This reflects the criteria outlined for Band 6.5.
