IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that the opportunity to help people is one of the most crucial things about being rich. I agree with this view. In my opinion, providing financial help to people in need and doing charity work is one of the most enjoyable and satisfying task a person with money can do.
First and foremost, providing help to people in need is one of the most satisfying jobs. Helping needy people gives a sense of calmness to people thoughts. It provides refreshment to people's minds and make them realise that they have accomplished what they hoped for in their lives. For example, Ratan Tata, one of the world most richest billionares donated more than 90% of his income to charity because he believed that other people in the world needed the money more than him.
In addition to this, helping individuals can motivate a person to work harder. It can provide better knowledge of the world regarding various problems faced by financially unstable people. For instance, if a person has achived what he wanted in life, he might be having a hard time finding what he would like to do with rest of his life. Donating to people and doing charity work can provide an aim for those people and motivate them to work harder in their lives.
To conclude, I agree with people who believe that the most important objective of being rich is to help others in need because it satisfies people mind, helps them become a better person and motivate them to work harden in their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by stating a clear position on whether the most important thing about being rich is helping others. The response presents relevant ideas, such as how charity brings personal satisfaction and motivates a person to work harder. These ideas are supported with examples, such as the reference to Ratan Tata. However, some arguments remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of how helping others gives a person an aim in life could be extended further with more detailed analysis. The position is maintained throughout the essay, leading to a solid Band 6.5 performance under the Task Achievement criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through two body paragraphs to a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct main point introduced by a cohesive marker like First and foremost and In addition to this. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical, and some referencing is slightly repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'people' throughout the text. Despite these minor limitations, the overall organization is clear and easy to follow, making Band 6.5 the most appropriate score for this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'financially unstable', 'charity work', and 'objective'. There are, however, several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as writing 'most richest billionares' instead of 'richest billionaires', using 'task' in the singular form incorrectly in 'satisfying task', and the spelling error 'achived' instead of 'achieved'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where less common vocabulary is attempted with some noticeable inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures and relative clauses. There is a reasonable degree of control over basic grammar, but several grammatical errors persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'make them realise' instead of 'makes them realise', missing articles such as 'with rest of his life', and spelling/morphology errors like 'motivate them to work harden' instead of 'harder'. These errors occur with some frequency but rarely impede overall communication, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 category for grammatical accuracy.
