IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Fincancial freedom is the primary goal of many people's lives. Whether or not the significance of this finalcial freedom should lead to helping others is subject to much debate. Many people believe that fiscal success is a personal endevour and as such, the sole benefit should be towards the individual who worked towards obtaining this success. I, however, disagree. Financial success is the culmination of various opportunities, relationships, and successes. This is why I believe monetary success is not an independant achievement and as such, should be used to 'pay it forward' and assist others.
Many people believe that fiscal freedom should result in the betterment of one's own life. This is because the accumulation of money can be seen as challanging and thus the reward should soley belong to the individual. An example of this is becoming wealthy through working one's way up the corporate ladder. This is a challanging task that requires commitment and dedication. These characteristics can be said to be intrinsic and relient on the individual. As such, many people believe that the benfits should be spent on the own personal gain as it was them who acheived these goals.
The latter argument suggests that excess money should be used to benefit others, prehaps those facing challanging circumstances. I wholeheartely agree with the latter, as it must be noted the no man is an island. We are all inter-connected and our success is dependant on those around us. Referring to the previous example of climbing the corporate ladder, the ability to do this is not soley at the hand of the individual. This extends to opportunities we have been given; such as a quaility education, job referals, and further training. Our relationships with people assist us like when our manager puts in a good word for an employees promotion. All of this is attested to others and for that very reason, using our fiscal success should be used to help others obtain simillar opportunities.
In conclusion, this allows individuals to give back to society and is the very essense of what humanity is founded on. As such, using our riches as an opportunity is help others is the very cornerstone of why we should be striving for that financial freedom. Our primary goal should be to assist others in improving their own lifes to strive for a happy, cohesive society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student presents a clear and well-developed position throughout the essay. The response fully addresses all parts of the task by exploring both sides of the argument—that wealth is a personal reward versus the idea that it should be used to help others—before firmly establishing the writer's stance. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as climbing the corporate ladder and receiving education or mentoring from others. The reasoning is logical and sustains a cohesive thread from the introduction through to the conclusion. While some points are slightly generalized, they are thoroughly elaborated and directly answer the prompt. This performance satisfies the core requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving from the introduction of the debate and the opposing view, to the student's supporting arguments, and finally to a neat conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as transitions like 'Many people believe', 'The latter argument', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, there are minor issues with referencing and slight mechanical transitions, which place this performance solidly at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'fiscal success', 'culmination', 'independent achievement', and 'inter-connected'. However, there are notable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'Fincancial' instead of financial, 'finalcial' instead of financial, 'endevour' instead of endeavor, 'challanging' instead of challenging, 'soley' instead of solely, 'relient' instead of reliant, 'benfits' instead of benefits, 'acheived' instead of achieved, 'prehaps' instead of perhaps, 'wholeheartely' instead of wholeheartedly, 'dependant' instead of dependent, 'quaility' instead of quality, 'attested' instead of attributed, 'simillar' instead of similar, 'essense' instead of essence, and 'lifes' instead of lives. These persistent spelling slips prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied syntactic structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors that recur throughout the essay. Examples include preposition and article usage slips, such as 'use our fiscal success should be used' (clunky repetition) and 'an opportunity is help others' instead of 'to help others'. Despite these non-impeding errors, meaning remains clear throughout, aligning with the Band 6 descriptor where a mix of structures is handled with some error.
