Student answer (Band 5.5)

In modern society, wealth is generally associated with financial security, independence and access to wide ranges of opportunity, while it can also gives individually to make a great contribution in society by helping others . Some people believes that the greatest advantage of being rich is they can help people in need. I largely agree with the statement, although I also believes that personal benefits such as freedom and security is also significant.

One of the reasons why helping others can be consider the greatest advantages of wealth is gives individual the power to address the serious problem. Wealthy people can donate to charities, funds educational programme and contribute to medical research. For instance, a rich individual can fund scholarship for disadvantage children, allow them to get better education. In, this way wealth can used for not merely personal consumption, but also as a force of positive change. Moreover, they can also provide fund or helps in community benefits like education, hospital and shelter that provides benefit to large group.

That said, I do not believe helping other is only benefits of being rich. Financial security can subsequently improve one own life. Wealth enable people to access better health, education and life. It also provide greatest freedom to pursue personal ambition, travel and commence business without worrying of finance. Therefore, personal benefits of finance can not be overlooked.

To conclude this, I largely agree that opportunity to help people is one of the most valuable aspects of being rich because it enable poor people or needy people to access better education, health and living and contribute to society. Nevertheless, financial freedom, security and better lifestyle is also significant of being wealthy. Ultimately, true value of wealth depends not only on how much a person possess, but also on how responsibly they use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout. The writer explores the prompt by agreeing that helping others is a major advantage of wealth, while also acknowledging other personal benefits like freedom and security. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as funding scholarships and contributing to medical research. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise in places, and some supporting details could be more fully developed to reach higher bands. Overall, the prompt is well-addressed, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, and is placed firmly at Band 6.5 due to slight generalisations and under-developed explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader through the writer's argument. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'That said', and 'Therefore' are employed to connect ideas, though some referencing is occasionally clunky or repetitive. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument. While the progression is generally clear, occasional faults in cohesion prevent it from reaching a higher band. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'financial security', 'positive change', and 'personal ambition'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and grammatical form errors throughout the text, such as 'gives individually' instead of 'gives individuals' and 'disadvantage children' instead of 'disadvantaged children'. Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, but they occur with enough frequency to restrict the score to a Band 6.0. The range is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, matching the criteria for this band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition in sentence structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, agreement, and tense consistency, such as 'Some people believes', 'wealth can used', and 'helping other is only benefits'. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, although they rarely impede overall communication. Complex structures are often attempted, but they frequently contain inaccuracies. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical control is inconsistent, placing the response securely in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, warranting a Band 6.0.
