IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate over whether wealthy people should help others. I largely agree with this view, because rich people can create ample employment opportunities and can contribute in charity and donation campaigns.

Many rich people help other people in terms of employment opportunities. Wealthy enterpreneurs can establish businesses and provide jobs to people from lower-income backgrounds. Consequently, employees may get chance to secure their future. Moreover, rich people can donate money in schools, hospitals, NGOs, and disaster-relief programs. By doing these tasks, many individuals from low-income families can get access of these facilities. Rich community also encourage students from low-income backgrounds to get quality education by providing assistantships. Therefore, students may improve their career prospects and receive a better salary. For example, wealthy businessman should provide scholarships for students who are well-achiever in their academic profession to support their education costs. As a result, they may not face financial burden for their studies.

However, some rich community do not provide their contribution to help others. The major reason why wealth is important is that it provides people with financial security. Wealth allows people to buy a luxury house, invest in well-known companies, healthcare, and education without financial stress, making their lives more convenient and comfortable. Another reason is that wealth can lead to a better quality of life. People with higher income can afford better housing, nutritious food, quality healthcare, and better education, which can improve their overall well-being and reduce financial pressure. As a result, their lives are happier and more enjoyable without financial difficulties.

Although wealthy people seek financial security and a better quality of life, I strongly believe that they should also help others, as their wealth can support to educate children and create many employment opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether the most important aspect of being rich is the opportunity to help others. The writer largely agrees in the introduction and conclusion, supporting this stance with relevant ideas such as job creation and charitable donations in the second paragraph. The counter-argument acknowledging financial security and personal comfort is also explored in the third paragraph, demonstrating balance. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or general, such as the brief mention of how wealthy individuals can donate money to schools and hospitals without deeper elaboration. Nevertheless, the main thrust of the prompt is successfully captured and sustained throughout the essay, aligning well with the Band 6.5 or Band 7 descriptors. Overall, the task is addressed adequately and a clear stance is maintained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction, through the body paragraphs, to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct sub-theme (job creation, counter-argument, and reaffirmation). Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'However', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their positioning. Referencing is generally clear, as seen in the phrase 'By doing these tasks', which effectively links back to the preceding sentence. While the progression is sufficiently clear to guide the reader effortlessly through the arguments, occasional rigidity in signposting keeps the essay at a solid Band 7 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'employment opportunities', 'disaster-relief programs', 'financial security', and 'well-being'. There are, however, some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'well-achieving' instead of high-achieving, and 'get access of these facilities' rather than get access to. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success, and occasional word choice errors appear, such as 'rich community' instead of 'wealthy people' or 'the wealthy'. Despite these limitations, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding the reader's understanding, fitting comfortably within the criteria for a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'By doing these tasks, many individuals...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward preposition usages throughout the text, such as 'contribute in charity' instead of 'contribute to charity' and 'wealthy businessman should provide' lacking pluralisation or articles in context. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors in grammar and article usage occur with some regularity, they rarely impede communication. The control over complex structures is developing, but frequent minor slips prevent the essay from reaching a higher band, making Band 6 an accurate reflection of the student's grammatical performance.
