IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believe that opportunity to help others is the most important thing of being a rich. I totally agree with the statement and this essay discusses the reasons and the suitable examples to support my views.

First of all, helping the needy is the most beloved act in every religion. The act of kindness provides the peace of heart and is the most vital to make the world beautiful. When a person becomes rich and helps the others people by doing something to make their life easier, he is honoured for being selected by God to spread kindness to creature. In this scenario, needy people gets the benefits, and opportunity to make their life better. If number of kind rich people present in a society, no one can stop them from prosperity. Deserving may get jobs and give their family a better life. This is possible, city is filled with kind-hearted elite or upper class.

Helping the other people does not mean to give money to poor people. There are many ways by which help can be given. Humanitarian work can be done like installation filtered water plant or blood bank. This will help the whole economy of the country when many unemployed get jobs, many underprevillaged get basic facilities. Nutrition and food security can be improved by starting different nutrition aid projects to rural sites of the country. In short, the world can be a better place to live if this happened.

In conclusion, there are many ways by which one can help others and improve their lives. This is, indeed, the most important thing of being a rich and I am standing with my endorsement with the statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position on the given statement regarding the primary importance of helping others for rich individuals. The response presents relevant ideas, such as religious motivations, psychological fulfillment, and community-level economic impacts through infrastructure or humanitarian projects. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive in places. For instance, the discussion on societal prosperity relies on generalized assertions rather than fully elaborated examples. Additionally, phrasing such as 'opportunity to help others is the most important thing of being a rich' indicates a partial engagement with the subtleties of the prompt. Nonetheless, a clear overall position is maintained throughout the essay. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as individual moral duties in the second paragraph and broader economic or community projects in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Words and phrases like 'First of all,' 'In this scenario,' and 'In short' are used to link sentences and paragraphs, but referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in 'If number of kind rich people present in a society, no one can stop them from prosperity.' The logical progression between sentences occasionally falters due to awkward transitions. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'humanitarian work,' 'underprevillaged' (misspelled as underprevillaged), and 'nutrition aid projects.' However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, awkward collocations, and spelling inaccuracies that occur throughout the response. Examples include 'most important thing of being a rich' instead of 'being rich,' 'peace of heart' instead of 'peace of mind,' and 'filtered water plant' instead of 'water filtration plant.' While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.0, as the vocabulary control is inconsistent and relies on repetitive patterns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with missing articles ('opportunity to help,' 'city is filled with'), preposition usage, and subject-verb agreement ('needy people gets the benefits'). Sentences such as 'If number of kind rich people present in a society, no one can stop them from prosperity' lack necessary auxiliary verbs and articles. While some complex structures are used, attempts at them are frequently faulty, causing some difficulty for the reader. These persistent errors place the grammar performance squarely within the Band 5 descriptors.
