IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Having the opportunity to help other people is the most precious thing that a rich person can do. I strongly agree that rich people should help others to overcome their problems and this would help to make them more rich.
Wealthy persons have to help the needy as this will create a sense of kindness in their heart and the poor people will overcome their difficulties. Money does not have much importance to rich people but it can solve the problems of others who need it. In a society wealthy personalities must take care of the families in their surrounding therefore, this can build a sense of belonging in both of them. For instance, most of the rich personalities are recorded for giving a huge charity to agencies which help homeless people.
Helping the poor families can reduce poverty in our country as well as it also balances the money flow from rich to poor. Being financially stable should encourage us to spend our money in public charities, giving opportunities to homeless people to own their house with easy payments, etc. This would bring a change in our society and can also help some citizens to become financially stable. For instance, the poverty rate of the country can be reduced by promoting such activities and this would be beneficial for all of us. Government of each country should also take a step to help their poor population.
In conclusion, many of the families could live their lives peacefully due to the donation of the wealthy public. As a result this would bring them close to each other and the difference between rich and poor would be reduced. Then, discrimination will automatically eliminate from our nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position that helping others is indeed the most precious and important thing a rich person can do. The main ideas are generally relevant, such as reducing poverty, balancing money flow, and creating a sense of belonging in society. However, some arguments lack deep development and tend to generalise or repeat points, such as stating multiple times that poverty will be reduced without introducing nuanced supporting mechanisms. For instance, the claim that helping others 'would help to make them more rich' is underdeveloped. Despite these minor limitations in full idea extension, a clear position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged coherently with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, fulfilling basic organisational expectations. Paragraphing is utilised, though some paragraphs bundle multiple distinct ideas, such as combining public charities, housing opportunities, and government roles into a single body paragraph. Cohesive devices are present, including phrases like 'For instance,' 'In a society,' and 'In conclusion.' However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or slightly imprecise, such as 'therefore, this can build a sense of belonging in both of them,' where pronoun reference ('both of them') is slightly ambiguous. Overall organisation provides a coherent progression, aligning well with Band 6 criteria.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'financially stable,' 'sense of belonging,' and 'public charities.' However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'rich personalities' instead of wealthy individuals, 'richer' instead of wealthier, and 'discrimination will automatically eliminate' instead of be eliminated. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary limitations and awkward phrasing prevent the piece from achieving a higher band. The lexical control is sufficient to convey meaning clearly despite these errors, matching the Band 6 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in 'Having the opportunity to help other people is the most precious thing that a rich person can do.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including missing articles ('Government of each country') and passive voice issues ('most of the rich personalities are recorded for giving'). Punctuation and verb tense consistency also falter at times, as seen in 'this would bring a change in our society and can also help.' These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score, placing the writing firmly at Band 6.
