IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is true that many people consider it crucial to be rich and also believes that we get an opportunity to help others too. I strongly agree with this statement as many of the people can't live happily because of their poorness.

On the one hand, it is clear that being rich is an important goal to achieve in our lives because we can make our life more convenient because we have the ability to buy more than our needs. In addition, there are many advantages of being rich as this provides us to have many financial and cultural benefits. While we also get a chance to help poor people who are not living their lives peacefully because they can't fulfil their needs though. Furthermore, being rich also makes us realize how poor people feel that's why we also feel a responsibility to help them. So, we should always help poor people because we are fortunate enough to help others and show kindness and true humanity. In addition, helping poor people not only improves their lives but also gives us a sense of satisfaction and teaches us the true meaning of kindness and humanity.

Furthermore, we should remember that even a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. Being a rich person always should be careful with taking care of poor people. However, wealth also offers significant personal advantages. People with sufficient financial resources do not have to worry constantly about basic necessities such as food, housing and healthcare. They may also have more freedom to choose their careers, travel, pursue hobbies and spend time with their families. In addition, financial security can allow people to invest in their own education or start businesses, potentially creating further opportunities for themselves and others. Consequently, helping others is not the only important benefit of being rich.

In my view, the value of wealth ultimately depends on how it is used. Having money can provide comfort and freedom but using it to improve the lives of others can give wealth a broader social purpose. Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to claim that helping others is the single most important aspect of being rich, since personal security and independence are also highly significant.

In conclusion, I largely agree that the opportunity to help others is one of the most important advantages of being wealthy. However, financial freedom, security and personal opportunities are also major benefits, and the greatest value of wealth may come from balancing personal well-being with generosity towards others.

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, such as 'financial security', 'basic necessities', 'broader social purpose', and 'personal independence'. There is an attempt to use less common items with awareness of style and collocation.
