IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some individuals argue that opportunity to help other people is one of the most important thing about being rich. I partially agree with this statement because having money can certainly help others, but I'm disagreeing with this too due to the fact that richness bring multiple other benifits too.

Firstly, with money one can become philanthrophist and can help create more jobs for other people. It can be a win-win situation for both. Rich and become more rich and can give opportunity to others for earning. Moreover, rich can also help in generational change by creating wellfare organizations that might give scholarships or other opportunities to students.

Other things also matter by having enough money. For example, one can have sense of security with the wealth and can have sureity that they can get out of any situation by spending enough. One can easily navigate through multiple challenges life through at them, for example health, education or security.

Conclusively, despite being rich can give opportunity to help others but it can also help oneself too in many difficult situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the idea of helping others through wealth and the personal benefits of being rich. Your position is clear from the introduction, where you state that you partially agree. However, the ideas are under-developed and lack sufficient elaboration and specific examples to fully explore the prompt. Furthermore, the response falls significantly short of the word count requirement, containing only 179 words compared to the minimum of 250 words. This under-length impacts your ability to fully develop your position and ideas, resulting in a penalty under Task Achievement. To improve, you must expand your arguments with more detailed explanations, concrete examples, and ensure you meet the minimum word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Moreover,' and 'For example' to structure your ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, and the paragraphing could be improved to better group related concepts. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as using 'rich' as a noun plural without an article or proper determiner ('rich can also help'). While the relationships between ideas are generally understandable, the mechanical use of cohesive devices and the lack of smooth transitions keep this section at a modest level. To achieve a higher band, work on smoother transitions between sentences and clearer logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary range is adequate for communicating basic ideas, but it is limited and contains several noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling. For instance, you wrote 'benifits' instead of benefits, 'richness bring' instead of wealth brings, and 'philanthrophist' with incorrect spelling. You also use repetitive phrasing, such as 'rich and become more rich' and 'help others'. While you attempt some less common vocabulary like 'philanthropist' and 'welfare organizations', the inaccuracies in spelling and collocation occasionally cause minor strain for the reader. To improve, focus on expanding your vocabulary range, paying close attention to word forms, parts of speech, and correct spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as using subordinate clauses introduced by 'due to the fact that' and 'despite being rich can give'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('opportunity to help', 'sense of security'), incorrect verb forms ('I'm disagreeing' instead of 'I disagree'), and awkward phrasing ('multiple challenges life through at them'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies persist across many sentences. Although these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent you from reaching a higher band score. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and using articles accurately.
