IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued that the most important thing being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. While, others have opposite opininon and I also believe in that being rich is important to help others.

In our society there are different prespectives related to this and I argue there are several factors that need to be taken into consideration when examining this issue. For example ,the economic growth and the development .First of all great opportunities comes with the greater responsibilities .So, being rich the one has the both the opportunity and responsibility to help others. Those who opposing this have the very good opinion too and it is that people will not try to do the things on their own. They will depend on the rich ones always.

Also our economy growth and development

are not working great these days so ,its important to help others. It is not necessary to help the individuals with the money . By looking at the economic growth the one can create opportunities for them. For example by giving them the jobs according to their fields and prior work experience .It will not only help for the individual also for the society .It will also be very benefical for economic growth .

In my conclusion ,both prespective have their own merits .However after considering both views .I truly believe that being rich is very significant to help others and with this idea economy can grow too and it will be helpul for the country as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. The candidate takes a clear position, stating that being rich is indeed significant for helping others, and briefly mentions opposing views, such as people becoming dependent. However, the ideas are rather limited and under-developed, lacking sufficient depth and specific real-world elaboration. For instance, the mention of economic growth and job creation is introduced in the third paragraph but remains quite superficial. Overall, the response fulfills the basic requirements of addressing all parts of the prompt, but the lack of extended, fully supported arguments places it at a Band 5.5 level according to the descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates some overall organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and mechanical or faulty cohesive devices. For example, the opening sentence uses awkward phrasing ('While, others have opposite opininon'), and paragraphing is poorly handled, with basic linking phrases like 'First of all' and 'Also' feeling repetitive. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and punctuation errors (such as spaces before commas, as seen in 'For example ,the economic growth') disrupt the flow. These features align closely with a Band 5.0 score for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'economic growth', 'development', and 'opportunities'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'opininon' instead of opinion, 'prespectives' instead of perspectives, and 'benefical' instead of beneficial. Collocations are sometimes awkward, such as 'economy growth'. While the vocabulary allows the writer to convey a basic message, the frequent lexical errors and lack of less common phrasing constrain the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay displays a very limited range of structures. While there are a few attempts at complex sentences, they are often faulty or marred by basic grammatical errors, such as 'the most important thing being rich' and 'being rich the one has the both the opportunity'. Punctuation and article usage errors are frequent, including missing articles and incorrect comma placements. Simple sentences predominate, and errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition use occur regularly, sometimes causing slight difficulty for the reader. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.0 for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
