IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is agued that the gratest benefit of being wealthy is the ability to support other people. I completely agree with this view. Altough being a rich gives personal comfort, helping society far more important.

There are also so many reasons why helping others is the most important aspect of wealth is that rich people can make a real difference in society. A normal person want to help poor people but they do not have enough money. For instance there are so many society which help the needy people in many ways such as Edhi and Akhuwat foundation they provide the free treatment to sick people who are diagnosed with contagious diseases such as cancer and hepatitis. In Pakistan many buisnessman donate money and charity which is used to educate poor children so that literacy rate reduce in their country. Therefore, wealth becomes truly meaningful when it is used to reduce poverty and improve lives.

On the other side they can buy new things such as cars or watches which is only a short term happiness. If they help poor people to solve their financial problems by spending money on them they will earn respect and peace in return of this. people will remember him even after his death. for instance Bill Gates is very famous for the charity than microsoft. This shows a true value of money not on buying personal things than improving lives.

In conclusions , although being rich provides luxury lifestyles, I strongly believe that most important thing about wealth is the opportunity to help others because it benefits both society and gives real meaning to the rich life person.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt directly and takes a clear position throughout, agreeing that helping others is the most important benefit of being wealthy. Main ideas are presented and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning the Edhi and Akhuwat foundations and referencing Bill Gates. However, some ideas tend to be slightly repetitive and under-developed, and the explanation in the body paragraphs lacks the depth required for a higher band. There are minor generalizations, but the main premise of the task is adequately covered, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, transitions between sentences and ideas can be mechanical and awkward, as seen with phrases like 'On the other side they can buy new things' and 'In conclusions'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used in a basic or repetitive manner. While the overall progression of ideas is discernible, the management of cohesion falls short of Band 7, making Band 6 an appropriate reflection of the organizational flaws.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words such as 'contagious', 'literacy', and 'charity'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('agued' for argued, 'gratest', 'Altough', 'buisnessman') and awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'reduce literacy rate' instead of reduce illiteracy or raise literacy rates. These errors are noticeable but do not heavily impede overall communication, placing the vocabulary use firmly at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent minor errors with articles ('a rich', 'the rich life person'), subject-verb agreement ('society which help'), and punctuation ('In conclusions ,'). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and communication is rarely impeded. The control of grammar corresponds to the characteristics of Band 5.
