IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some say that the most important thing is about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others.

So in my point of view the idea is not bad that if you have the money then you can help the poor and needy people's who are eiligible and and live hand to mouth and you can donate at trust and charities.

But it doesn't mean that you feel comfort or you can live happily there is no interconnection between the money and your satisfaction because man is hasty by nature and he desire for more and more before his death.

It is unrealistic on the other hand to say that helping others is not only or even the main motivation for being rich. Because for the most of the people, the primary importance of wealth is personal security and freedom. Money gives freedom from financial stress, access to better healthcare, quality education, and a comfortable lifestyle. It allows people to travel, pursue their hobbies, and secure their children's future. In fact, many wealthy people do not engage in charity at all, which shows that personal benefit is also a major factor.

In conclusion, although personal comfort is an undeniable advantage of wealth, i believe the opportunity to help others is the most important aspect. Money becomes truly meaningful when it is used not just to improve one's own life, but also to improve the lives of others. So money is useful when it is used for the developement of society and to improve the lives of people who are needy otherwise there is no meaning of having money because our aim in life to help the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position regarding whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. The writer attempts to explore multiple viewpoints, acknowledging that wealth brings personal security and freedom before ultimately concluding that the opportunity to help others is the most meaningful aspect. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the discussion in the second paragraph regarding satisfaction and human nature. The arguments are generally relevant, but the support lacks the depth and extension required for a higher band. For instance, stating that 'wealthy people do not engage in charity at all' is a sweeping generalisation. Overall, the task is addressed with a consistent position, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 territory.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a logical overall arrangement, and the response is divided into recognisable paragraphs with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical. For example, sentences in the opening paragraphs are often linked rather loosely with coordinating conjunctions like 'and' or conversational openings such as 'So in my point of view'. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally strained, and the transition between ideas could be smoother. Paragraphing is used, but the internal structuring of sentences within paragraphs sometimes lacks clarity and precision. Cohesive devices are present but can be repetitive or awkward, limiting the score to Band 5.5 or 6.0. Given the general logic of the arguments, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'financial stress', 'access to better healthcare', and 'personal security'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'eiligible' instead of 'eligible', 'donate at trust' instead of 'donate to trusts', and 'developement' with a spelling error. The phrase 'people's' in 'needy people's' is also an inappropriate plural form. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, the noticeable errors and spelling inaccuracies mean the vocabulary control is limited, fitting the Band 5.5 or 6.0 descriptors. Because communication is not impeded by these issues, a Band 6.0 is justified.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'Because for the most of the people, the primary importance of wealth is personal security and freedom.' However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('for the most of the people' instead of 'for most people'), run-on sentences joined excessively by conjunctions, and punctuation issues. Minor slip-ups like 'i believe' (uncapitalised pronoun) also occur. These errors do not generally impede communication, but they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching a Band 7. The control of grammar aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
