Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Mostly, people believe that rich people of the society has the opportunity to help others. I strongly agree with the statement because the ellite people can help the poor of the socity by providing better facilities for health, education and travel by donating.

The rich can help others by raising funds. They can donate to the organisations working for the welfare of the poor of the socity. By doing so, organisations can construct schools for the students whose parents does not afford their education. This can make those students change their fate by working hard and by gaining better opportunities. Similarly, they can donate funds to the hospitals which can improve the health facilities for the people who do not afford to spend thousands on their health.

The ellite class can also invest in the travelling facilities making everyday commute relatively easy for the people. This will lead to the development of the country by making travelling esay for the common people. For instance, they can collaborate with the organisation in the construction of public bus servise covering all the major ares of the city. This will lead to the development of the city making travelling easy and accessible for everyone in the area.

In conclusion, rich can contribute in the development of the country by making better facilities for the poor. They can contribute in construction of schools and hospitals for the poor and also contribute in the development of public transportation services, leading to the development of the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a clear stance that the greatest value of wealth lies in the opportunity to help others through philanthropy. The ideas are relevant and supported by specific examples, such as funding schools, hospitals, and public transportation. However, some arguments remain somewhat repetitive and under-developed, relying on general assertions rather than deeper exploration of alternative viewpoints. For instance, the discussion on travel and public buses essentially repeats the idea of city development twice within the same paragraph. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are addressed with a clear overall position, which aligns well with the requirements of a Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs focusing on distinct points, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate ideas like education, healthcare, and transportation. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'This will lead to...' and 'They can contribute...'. Referencing is generally clear, but transitional phrases lack variety. Despite these minor issues, the logical progression is maintained throughout the text, justifying a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'philanthropy' implied through 'donating', 'welfare', and 'collaborate'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'ellite' instead of 'elite', 'socity' instead of 'society', 'does not afford' instead of 'cannot afford', and 'esay' instead of 'easy'. Additionally, collocations are occasionally unnatural, such as 'invest in the travelling facilities'. These vocabulary limitations and frequent spelling errors restrict the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses ('whose parents does not afford') and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'rich people... has' instead of 'have', 'parents does not afford' instead of 'do not afford', and 'rich can contribute' instead of 'the rich can contribute'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of grammatical slips impacts readability and places the performance at the Band 5.5 level.
