IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

An unspecified amount of people believe that rich people have opportunity to serve the society with their money. I totally agree to this approach for helping others and in this essay I will discuss both the views and explain my perspective.

It can be argued that people who work hard and earn sufficient wealth have their own will that they spend on the local people. Although to reach at this point can be challenging to obtain such potential because with the passage of time the survival in large cities is not effortless. To feed the family and fullfill the desires are human instinct that may cause a barrier which make people to spend on themselves rather on others.

Despite, the gain of wealth and respect might turn a person towards others for helping and growing them as humans wanted to be and it provide a beneficial role to the nation and also the government that the flow of money circulates in the society through which many people who deserve to be treated receive without hesitation. Wealthy people has more flexibility to spend in organisations and in schemes which are especially built for the deserving people.

In conclusion, Both views has strongly statements for spending wealth according to role and their purpose, however, from my standpoint, I believe that rich people have come in front line and support to deserving ones who are suffering from hunger and the basic human needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether the most important thing about being rich is the opportunity to help others. However, the student states they will 'discuss both the views and explain my perspective,' which misinterprets the task instruction asking 'To what extent do you agree or disagree?' rather than a discussion essay. The position is somewhat unclear due to awkward phrasing, and the ideas presented are rather limited and under-developed. Furthermore, the length requirement has NOT been met, as the response contains only 240 words, falling short of the 250-word minimum. This negative impact on development and the misinterpretation of the essay type restricts the score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some overall organisation with distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is no clear overall logical progression due to weak and confusing linking devices, such as starting a paragraph with 'Despite, the gain of wealth...' and concluding with 'Both views has strongly statements'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it occasionally difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is somewhat limited and repetitive, though minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'circulation' and 'flexibility', but this is marred by noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'fullfill the desires are human instinct' and 'rich people has more flexibility'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex forms are faulty or grammatically unstable, such as 'Although to reach at this point can be challenging to obtain such potential because...'. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Wealthy people has', 'Both views has strongly statements') and incorrect prepositions ('reach at this point'). While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they cause noticeable reader difficulty.
