IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believe that the most important advantage of being rich is having the opportunity to help others. I partly agree with this view because wealth can allow people to support in need, although being rich also providers serveral personal benefits and opportunities.

On the one hand, wealthy people can make a significant positive contribution to society by helping disadvantaged people. They can donate money to charity, provide scholarships, or support hospitals and schools. For instance, a wealthy person may provide fund in education for the poor childrens, which can improve their future career opportunities. Therefore, having enough money can make it easier to create positive change in other people's life.

On the other hand, I disagree with the given statement that being rich is not mainly about helping others, it also provides personal security, freedom, and achieve one's own goal. Wealthy people will first thinks about their own financial security and personal freedom than having the opportunity to help others.

In conclusion, i agree that helping others can be considered as a good habbit but making is the most important for the rich people should not be essential for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, and it must be noted that the length requirement is not met as the essay falls significantly short of the minimum two hundred and fifty-word limit. Your position is stated in the introduction where you partially agree, but the development of your ideas remains limited and under-developed. For example, while you mention that wealthy people can donate money to charity or provide scholarships, these points are not fully extended or supported with deeper explanations. Additionally, the third paragraph shifts slightly into arguing against the statement rather than maintaining a clear, cohesive line of reasoning about the extent of your agreement. To reach a higher level, you need to fully develop all parts of the prompt with well-supported arguments and ensure you meet the required word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, successfully bridging into the higher band by employing clear formatting and paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your ideas, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' in the second and third paragraphs, and 'In conclusion' for the final paragraph. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen with referencing issues where transitions between sentences feel a bit abrupt. To move further up, you should integrate cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing within and between paragraphs is smoother and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing enough range to communicate your basic meaning, but noticeable errors are present that prevent a higher score. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'significant positive contribution' and 'financial security', but there are recurring lexical inaccuracies and word-form errors, including 'providers serveral' instead of 'provide several', 'fund in education' instead of 'funding for education', and 'poor childrens' where the plural form is incorrect. Spelling and word choice issues also appear, such as 'habbit'. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, ensuring correct word forms and minimizing collocation errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a limited range of sentence structures, relying on a mix of simple and somewhat complex forms. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. For instance, you wrote 'wealth can allow people to support in need' which contains a preposition error, and 'being rich is not mainly about helping others, it also provides' which is a comma splice. Other errors include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'wealthy people will first thinks' and missing articles or incorrect plurals. To improve your grammatical score, you should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise better control over verb tenses, agreements, and punctuation.
