IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Rich people have the opportunity to help others and according to some people, this is the most important aspect of being rich. I largely disagree with this opinion because to help others, being rich is not necessary and most of the rich people do not cosinder it as their first priority.

Helping people is an important virtue and it is not directly dependent on wealth. One can help others even without weath. It can be in the form of knowledge sharing, helping someone by working, volunteering etc. If someone is rich and has the desire to help others, that person can create a greater impact but people with regular weath are contributing more as they have greater participant numbers. For example, Greta Thunburg is not very known for her wealth but she is doing a great job in protecting climate that helps millions of people who are vulnerable due to global warming. Her works are more imapctful than a lot of rich people. So, willingness and motivaion are more important than wealth to help others.

Furthermore, not all the rich people are eager to help others. Some of them actually doing great and donating their wealth to help others. However, that number of people is not significant when compared to total number of rich people. Most of the rich people are interested in their business and how to expand it to create more wealth. They help others only after they become too rich or to improve their personal brand image. Thus, the motivation behind helping people can be questioned. So, in my opinion, helping others is not considered as the most important thing by rich people and most of them do it boost their public image.

In conclusion, it is not mandatory to become rich to help others. One can do that with knowledge and effort. Morevoer, rich people does not consider it as their first priority.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, establishing a clear position that disagrees with the statement that helping others is the most important aspect of being wealthy. Relevant ideas are presented, such as the fact that non-wealthy individuals also contribute significantly and that many wealthy people prioritize business expansion over philanthropy. However, some ideas are under-developed or rely on broad generalizations. For instance, the example of Greta Thunberg touches upon activism without wealth, but the exploration of why wealthy individuals might only help for public relations remains somewhat superficial rather than fully extended with deeper analysis or varied examples. Nevertheless, the main arguments are sufficiently clear and directly respond to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction through body paragraphs discussing alternative forms of help and the motivations of the rich, ending with a clear conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct main points. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For example, transition phrases like 'Furthermore, not all the rich people are eager to help others. Some of them actually doing great...' create slight abruptness, and referencing is not always completely clear. Cohesive devices are employed adequately to guide the reader, but their management lacks the flexibility and seamless flow needed for a higher level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's arguments about wealth, motivation, and philanthropy. There are attempts to use less common items, such as 'virtue', 'philanthropy', and 'public image', but these are accompanied by noticeable word choice errors and typos, such as 'cosinder', 'weath', 'participant numbers', and 'motivaion'. Spelling and word-choice mistakes occur throughout the text, including 'impactful' and 'Morevoer', but they do not seriously impede communication. The range of vocabulary remains somewhat limited and repetitive, preventing access to higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to handle subordinate clauses and conditional structures. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'most of the rich people do not cosinder' and 'rich people does not consider', as well as article omissions and awkward phrasing like 'Some of them actually doing great and donating their wealth'. While these errors do not impede overall communication and the meaning remains clear, they occur frequently enough to characterize the grammatical control at this level.
