IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often believed that the most crucial aspect of being rich is having ability to help others in their times of difficulty and crisis. I totally agree with this view that people who are wealthy should help low-income families, particularly among their relatives and communities, also contribute to childrens' education those who cannot affort their tutuion fees.

One major reason why I agree with this view is that rich people should help those who are in depth of financial crisis. This approach can improve he quality of life of low-income families, atleast temporarily. For instance, recently, the large applicances building caught burn, causing significant damage to the property. At this point families who can affort the living for two, should help those families. Consequently, this approach may reduce the burden in those affected families. In addition, various communities are sometimes go through such condition, like hunger. So, those who are able to help those families should help them.

Another main reason is that sometimes students are not able to submitting their tutuion fees timely because they do not have employement or they usually belong to low-income families. This can be overcome if wealthy people should contribute not only in their education but also in their everyday lives. As a result, poor children may get to chance to pursue study with other peers.

In conclusion, It is often argued that rich people should have the opportunity to help other, I totally agree with this view as wealthy people should help low- income families, particulary who faces some traumas and crisis amd also contribute in education system for poor students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing with the notion that the primary benefit of wealth is helping others. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as assisting families facing financial crises and supporting students with tuition fees. However, some ideas remain under-developed or somewhat unclear. For instance, the example regarding 'the large applicances building caught burn' is underdeveloped and confusing in its explanation of how it relates to helping others. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to extend and support all main ideas with fully developed, coherent examples rather than leaving arguments partially explained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression through distinct paragraphs. Information and ideas are generally grouped logically, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific reasons, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'One major reason', 'In addition', and 'Another main reason'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, and referencing is not always completely clear. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but to achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure that all cohesive links flow more naturally and that transitions between sentences are entirely smooth without repetitive structural patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to communicate basic ideas about wealth and charity. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'financial crisis', 'low-income families', and 'employement', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form. For example, terms like 'applicances', 'affort', 'tutuion', and 'depth' instead of 'debt' indicate frequent lexical inaccuracies. Furthermore, phrasing like 'submitting their tutuion fees' shows unnatural collocation. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical range and exercise much greater control over word choice, spelling, and collocation to avoid impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like ideas. However, there are numerous errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include missing articles, incorrect prepositions inside grammatical patterns ('in depth of financial crisis' instead of 'in the depths'), and awkward verb complementation ('get to chance to pursue study'). While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to hold the score back. To move to a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate better control over articles, plurals, and complex sentence structures.
