IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the world of today being rich isnt just possessions like money , expensive things like gold etc.But being with the heart of helping the people who is in need.

Being possession with valuables can not make us a good human being but when help others who are helpless can make us good people.

Helping others cant not just donating money but can be with food , clothing, medicine and other things to cop with day to day challenges. As the great wording "Manava seve madhava seva" the literal meaning is serving human is like serving god.If we help the people who are in helpless situation were nature can inturn becomes in our favour when we are in that kind of situation.By helping others the great things can happen to the greater good of the humanity.People do not stop until someone to come and help other than act upon.As there is a popular saying that Helping hands are better than praying one .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a limited position on whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 162 words, falling well short of the minimum 250 words. The ideas are under-developed and lack extension. For instance, the mention of donating 'food, clothing, medicine' is introduced briefly without further elaboration or concrete examples to support the main argument. To reach the next level, you need to write at least 250 words and fully develop your ideas with detailed explanations and relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation in the text, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The writing is presented in a single block of text rather than distinct paragraphs with clear topic sentences, which hinders the logical flow. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as abrupt transitions between sentences like 'In the world of today being rich isnt just possessions...'. To improve, you should structure your essay into clear paragraphs—an introduction, body paragraphs with distinct points, and a conclusion—and use a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately to guide the reader through your arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with word choice, word form, and collocations, such as 'Being possession with valuables' instead of 'Possessing valuables' and 'cop with' instead of 'cope with'. Spelling and punctuation slips also occur. To move to a higher band, you should expand your lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary and idiomatic phrases with greater precision, while ensuring correct word forms and minimizing lexical errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of structures, with frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent issues with sentence formation, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'the people who is in need' instead of 'people who are in need' and 'helping others cant not just donating'. Attempts at complex structures are often faulty, and punctuation is inconsistently handled. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures while improving grammatical accuracy, ensuring that the majority of your sentences are free from basic errors.
