IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people beleive that the most valuable benefit of rich person have the opportunity to help other people. i agree with this view because wealthy people can support the needy individuals and improve lives.

Firstly, wealthy people have more opportunities to help those who are from poor families. they can donate money and gives the charity, and they can also provide food, clothes and shelter along with medical treatment. For example, a rich person can make the small house where homeless people can live there or they can provide jobs for them where they can survive. As a result, they should not live in the street and have their own house.

Secondly, being rich person can provide comfortable and secure life. they can provide better education by paying fees of their children. Wealthy people can provide other facilities such as healthcare , housing etc. However, i beleive that helping people is meaningful who are in difficultyand cannot fulfill their basic needs. For instance, they can build the school to the poor communities by giving free education to them. If they don't have food to eat they they can provide it by giving meals or money. Therefore, they can also fulfill their needs by teaching to their children and having hospitals in their locality.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that having the opportunity to help the poor person's is one of the most important benefits of being rich.they can support by various ways to them .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response partially addresses the prompt by discussing whether the opportunity to help others is the most important aspect of being rich. A position is stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive points about providing food, clothes, and shelter without sufficient extension or depth. Furthermore, please note that the response falls short of the minimum length requirement of 250 words, containing only 245 words, which negatively impacts the completeness of the task completion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation evident in the essay, with clear paragraph breaks used to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by mechanical or repetitive cohesive devices. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in phrases like 'they can support by various ways to them'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion needs to be managed more skillfully to ensure a smoother transition of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'wealthy people' and 'needy individuals', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling, such as 'beleive' instead of 'believe' and 'rich person have' instead of 'rich people have'. These errors reflect a restricted lexical range and can occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader in fully grasping the intended nuances.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to noticeable structural errors. There are frequent errors in verb forms, articles, plurals, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'rich person can provide comfortable and secure life' (missing articles) and 'gives the charity' (incorrect preposition and verb form). These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
