IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Money is something that cannot be neglected in this era and those have more money are considers as rich as our everyday life basic necessities are dependent on money, So those who are rich have opportunity to help others I agree to this statement full and In this eassy I will explain how they can help with examples.

In our daily life the Food we have to keep ourself healthy and fit to live is purchased by money, the clothes we wear to protect ourself from harsh weather is expensive, for shelter we need house and for travelling we need Fare or petrol which are linked to money. So those who are rich can afford their own needs but they also have opportunity to help those who are needy and who need money to fulfill their daily requirments.

My brother is the epitome of using his money as opportunity to help others there are many live examples in front of me in which he have provided food to some families who cannot even afford two meals a day, bought house for those who have no shelter to live and most facinating part is he has paid school fee of many childerns whoes parents cannot afford their school fee.I think he is using this as opportunity because it give him a lot of good wishes.

In conclusion I would say we all should help others in whatever possible way we can there is no specific criteria for it but those who are rich and taking it as opportunity are successul and playing their role well in society. We should also have to do so that everyone can have better life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that wealth offers an opportunity to help others, and you maintain this view through the response. The examples of your brother providing food, housing and school fees are relevant and give the argument a personal illustration. You also address the broader idea that money can meet basic needs. However, the discussion focuses mainly on what rich people can do, rather than explaining whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. The point that helping brings “a lot of good wishes” is introduced but not developed, and the conclusion shifts towards saying everyone should help without directly weighing the claim. Develop this distinction and explain why this opportunity matters most to you.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The second body paragraph’s examples follow a clear pattern, moving from food to housing and education, and the conclusion returns to the theme of helping society. However, progression is sometimes mechanical, with repeated links such as “So” and “those who are rich,” and several ideas are crowded into long sentences. For example, the opening combines background, the position and a preview without clear sentence boundaries. Some references are also unclear, particularly “I think he is using this as opportunity,” where “this” could refer to money or the chance to help. Use clearer sentence divisions and more precise links between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “basic necessities,” “shelter,” “needy” and “opportunity,” and the examples make your meaning generally understandable. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “the epitome,” though this is not quite natural in the context. Overall, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which can make the reader pause: for example, “daily requirments,” “school fee of many childerns” and “good wishes.” Spelling errors such as “eassy,” “facinating” and “successul” are noticeable. Build a wider set of accurate phrases for discussing charitable support, and check spelling and natural word combinations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences that connect reasons and examples, so there is some variety in structure. The main ideas can usually be followed, but errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, verb forms and articles recur. For instance, “those have more money are considers as rich” has problems with the relative clause and verb form, while “he have provided” does not agree with its subject. The opening and the sentence beginning “In our daily life” run several clauses together, with commas or no punctuation where full stops are needed. These issues sometimes make relationships between ideas harder to follow. Practise building accurate complex sentences, then check subject–verb agreement and punctuation in each sentence.
