IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that the major quality of becoming rich is the ability to help others. The main reason of that is a moral responsibilty and the affect on their reputation. I agree with this statement due to many factor related to the public welfare that requires a constant funding.

Firstly, individual who enjoys success in their life has a moral responsibility to work for the betterment of the society. The primary reason for that is the person uses natural resources that belong to whole community that put some responsibility on him. Since, he has moral responsbility as human due to his role as member of society that has its own morals and ethics. For instance, Ratan Tata denoted majority of his regular earning to charity for the educatipon and other welfare programs. As a result, many people recieved help from the donations to access basic neccessity of daily life such as clean drinking water.

The reputation is a major factor for any business to be successful. The businesses or individuals who engage in public welfare rather than just focusing on accumulating profits are more trusted by the people in the society. Many successful celebrities donate their money to places facing disasters or wars. For example, many famous celebrities have helped through funding for the childrens who survived in the war between Israel and Palestine. The denotion shown their care for humanity and suffering people in the momemts of the disaster.

In conclusion, I believe that successful people have obligation to care for the people in need as human through donations and other help which will have positive impact on their public image. The humanity is above all the profits and riches in my prespective.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that helping others is an important benefit and responsibility associated with wealth. Both body paragraphs give relevant reasons—social responsibility and reputation—and the examples of Ratan Tata and disaster-related donations help illustrate them. This covers the task, but the response focuses mainly on why wealthy people should help, rather than fully examining whether the opportunity to help is the most important aspect of being rich. The reputation argument is also less developed: explain how it relates to the value of wealth, rather than only noting that donations can build trust. To strengthen the response, acknowledge another possible benefit of wealth and explain why helping others matters more, while extending each example with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two reason-based body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and each paragraph has a recognisable focus. However, some links are mechanical, and a few references are unclear. In “Since, he has moral responsibility,” the opening does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence, while “The denotion shown their care” leaves the reader unsure whose care is meant. The conclusion repeats the main position but does not draw together the two reasons. Use linking expressions more selectively, make pronoun references explicit, and connect each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “moral responsibility,” “public welfare,” “charity,” and “accumulating profits,” which helps communicate the central ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less clear: “major quality of becoming rich,” “regular earning,” and “denotion” are not natural choices in context. Several misspellings, including “responsibilty,” “educatipon,” and “neccessity,” also reduce accuracy. Build a more reliable range by learning common word partnerships and checking word forms and spelling. Prefer precise expressions such as “a key benefit of wealth” and “donated most of his income,” and avoid using formal-sounding words unless their meaning and form are certain.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and cause-and-effect structures, as in “The businesses or individuals who engage in public welfare…” and “Since, he has moral responsibility…”. This shows some range, but control is uneven. Errors in articles, agreement and sentence construction appear in phrases such as “individual who enjoys success,” “resources that belong to whole community,” and “that put some responsibility on him.” The sentence beginning “Since” is also a fragment, and the comma after “Since” is misplaced. These issues do not prevent the reader from following the main argument, but they limit accuracy. Practise complete subordinate clauses, check singular and plural agreement, and review article use when introducing people and general nouns.
