IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Being wealthy means you can have many great chances to assist others in varies way. Some people argue that it is not the core thing about being financially successful. From my point of view, they have to acknowledge that have a opportunity to help others is the main part of it.

First of all, rich people play a huge role when it comes to give a hand to others. Thousands of people are suffering from many issues in front of their life appreciate the assistance. This is because most of the time, it can also benefit rich people, as they gain reputation from it. For instance, Korean deep pockets, who have a company, neat house and such things on their own, attracts a great number of fans after donating a certain amount of money when they get in a be it or small trouble to cover.

Second of all, they can contribute to development of countries by funding money to projects which are lacking in investment. According to the research, only every 3 of 10 rich people have ever financed others in their life. If they had been investing more to outside, some countries would have a great development. Therefore, we should encourage them to give fund to governments and other organizations as much as they can. Moreover, they should be informed that their sponsor is the most significant thing they can do to bright future.

In conclusion, wealthy people are the vital role that cannot be abandoned in aid resources for many. Therefore, i believe the most substantial thing about being rich is having many opportunities to help others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that helping others is the most important aspect of wealth, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons—personal assistance and funding development. The example about wealthy Korean businesspeople donating money also attempts to illustrate how giving can benefit donors through reputation. However, some points are not fully explained or are unclear. The claim that people are “suffering from many issues” needs a specific example, and the discussion of financing countries does not clearly show why this makes helping others the most important feature of being rich. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation and connect it directly to the question. Your conclusion restates your view, but could briefly synthesise the two arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “First of all” and “Second of all,” and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to identify. Some connections between ideas, however, are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This is because most of the time” does not clearly explain the preceding claim, and “Therefore” introduces a recommendation to encourage donations rather than a fully developed consequence of the argument. The example in the first body paragraph is also difficult to follow, which interrupts progression. Use linking phrases that show the precise relationship between claims, and make sure each paragraph moves from a clear topic sentence to explanation and a relevant example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “financially successful,” “reputation,” “donating,” “funding,” and “investment,” and you attempt less common expressions such as “substantial.” This gives you a useful starting range for discussing wealth and social contribution. However, inaccurate word choice and collocation are noticeable and sometimes make meaning difficult to follow: “assist others in varies way,” “Korean deep pockets,” “get in a be it or small trouble,” and “give fund” are not natural or clear expressions. There are also word-form and spelling problems, such as “bright future” where a verb meaning “improve” is intended. Build a bank of accurate collocations for charity, investment, and social development, and check that each chosen phrase expresses your intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure: “If they had been investing more … some countries would have a great development.” This shows an effort to express relationships between ideas, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur across the response. Examples include “they have to acknowledge that have a opportunity,” which needs a subject and correct article, and “rich people … attracts,” where the verb does not agree with its subject. In “people are suffering from many issues in front of their life appreciate the assistance,” the sentence structure is incomplete and the relationship between clauses is unclear. Practise accurate clause formation, subject–verb agreement, and articles, then proofread each sentence for a complete grammatical structure.
