IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued by some people that being a rich the most significant thing is that they have opportunity to help needy people.

On one hand, I think that they are right because rich people have different opportunities to help poor and needy people. They have plenty of resources to help other people. As they are rich so they have a lot of money and they can use this money to help in different ways like they can buy different things of daily use and give these things to needy people, they can give money as well to those people who needs financial help. They can help people in paying their debt. So it is proved that rich have different opportunities to help others.

On the other hand, some rich people have oppurtunities to help other people and also have plenty of resources but they don't help needy people because they are very miser. They are from that kind of people who have many resources but they are too conjusted to spend. They never feel pain of anyone because they are not kind hearted. They don't care of anyone. Even they don't spend money on themselves. Their body is big but the heart inside this body is too small.

To sum up,the most riches are kind hearted and they help people for the sake of Allah.I totally agree this content that to being a rich they have many opportunities to help others. As they have many resources so they should help the poors and needy ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear overall: you agree that wealth creates opportunities to help others, and you acknowledge that some wealthy people choose not to do so. The examples of giving money, buying daily necessities and helping with debt are relevant to the question. However, the response only partly develops the idea of whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. It mainly explains how wealthy people can help, rather than weighing this against other possible benefits or clarifying why this opportunity matters most. The point about miserly people adds a qualification, but claims such as “the most riches are kind hearted” are broad and not supported. Develop the central argument more fully and make the conclusion follow from that reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signalled by “On one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a concluding summary. This makes the main direction easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, ideas are often linked mechanically or repeated. The first body paragraph lists several ways to help, then repeats that rich people have “different opportunities” and “plenty of resources.” The long sentence beginning “As they are rich so…” would be clearer if divided into shorter units, each developing one example. Some links are also awkward, such as “To sum up” followed immediately by another assertion. Use referencing and transitions more selectively, and organise each paragraph around a distinct claim supported by explanation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “resources,” “financial help,” “debt,” and “kind hearted.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repeated, particularly “help,” “people,” and “opportunities.” There are also noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems that sometimes make the reader pause: “being a rich,” “the most riches,” “too conjusted,” and “the poors” are not natural forms in this context. “For the sake of Allah” communicates a personal motivation, but it is not connected to the argument about whether helping is the most important aspect of wealth. Build a more precise range for discussing wealth, responsibility and charitable giving, and check spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction recur. For example, “being a rich the most significant thing is” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “those people who needs financial help” has a subject–verb agreement error. “I totally agree this content that to being a rich…” is also difficult to interpret because the clause is not formed correctly. Some sentences run together, especially the extended sentence listing ways to help, and punctuation around paragraph openings and transitions is inconsistent. Practise accurate clause patterns and agreement, then use shorter sentences to control the longer examples.
