IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people are of the opinion that, by being rich, the most vital thing a person can do is to help others around him. I agree to this point. The elites have the opportunity to help others as compared to the other social classes, mainly due to the availability of multiple resource. However, I emphasize that the success of others is not their responsibility. The rich can only provide opportunities, not personally assist them.

The elite circle have access to such facilities that are not readily available to the general populace. Things like access to quality education at institutes like Harvard, Cambridge, and Standford is not possible for everyone, especially the common public. Along with this, getting proper treatments for chronic diseases at expensive hospitals is also out of the question for many lower and middle class families. On the contrary, the elites usually don't face this problem due to a strong financial backing. Lastly, the wealthy people also have a strong business heritage that has been handed down to them. Therefore, finding a stable job at a successful business is not difficult for them.

I am in favour of the opinion that the rich have the choice of helping others, however, they are not bound to support them. In order for a society to operate properly and have an essence of empathy and humanity, every human should help each other as much as he can. In the case of the upper class, it is impossible for them to financially support everyone in their community. However, they can provide opportunities like sponsorships and scholarships to talented students by doing a partnership with different universities. Furthermore, they can collaborate with both private and government hospitals in order to provide the extremely ill patients with free treatment or a relief in their hospital bills. Lastly, they can help new small business by offering partnerships and funding that could benefit both parties. In all these cases, the rich can help others without directly taking on the responsibilty of their life.

Overall, I believe that everyone in a society needs a chance to grow and succeed whether he is rich or poor. Since rich have more facilities, they can provide a platform or give a chance to other people to improve their lives as well, without directly being involved in their life decision.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that helping others is an important opportunity wealth provides, while arguing that wealthy people are not responsible for everyone’s success. You address the prompt with relevant examples involving education, healthcare and business support, and the conclusion returns to the idea that wealth can create opportunities. These points are extended with practical suggestions such as scholarships and hospital partnerships. To develop the response further, explain more directly why helping others is the most important aspect of being rich, rather than focusing at length on advantages the wealthy themselves enjoy. The claim that success is not their responsibility also needs a clearer connection to the question’s emphasis on the value of helping others. Some claims, such as inherited business advantages, are broad and would benefit from qualification or support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs develop relevant points, and the conclusion summarises your position. Sequencing within the examples is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the contrary,” “Furthermore” and “Lastly” help readers track the discussion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical because several examples are introduced through repeated listing language, especially “Lastly” and “In all these cases.” The first body paragraph also shifts from the wealthy’s access to education and healthcare to inherited business advantages without making the relationship between these examples explicit. To strengthen progression, use fewer formulaic transitions and add sentences that explain how each example supports your central argument about helping others.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial backing,” “chronic diseases,” “sponsorships,” “scholarships” and “collaborate.” These choices allow you to discuss education, healthcare and business support with some specificity. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the general populace” and “operate properly.” At times, however, word choice or collocation is awkward: “the elite circle,” “a strong business heritage,” “a relief in their hospital bills” and “business by offering partnerships” are not natural in these contexts. “Responsibility of their life” is also unclear. Spelling errors such as “Standford” and “responsibilty” reduce accuracy. Aim for more idiomatic combinations and check spelling carefully; this would make the vocabulary more precise and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “Since rich have more facilities” and the contrast introduced by “however.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the examples are generally presented in complete sentences. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement and plural forms. For example, “The elite circle have” has a singular subject with a plural verb, while “multiple resource” needs a plural noun. “Since rich have” also needs an article or a plural noun phrase, and “every human should help each other” has a mismatch between singular “every human” and “each other.” Review these patterns and check sentence punctuation, especially around contrastive “however,” to improve control while retaining your range of structures.
