IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

A bunch amount of people believe that being rich is a blessing because you can help others without hesitation. I completely agree with this statement but the problem is that not every rich person is willing to help others.

Helping others is the most generous act in this busy world and upgrade the status and respect of helper in society. It help to strengthen the community bond and unity in people. Poor people's confidence insrease on rich people and sense of deprivation minimise. It create prosperity in society and crime rate also decreased because less privilaged people satisfy at some extent and have no gruges againt rish people. however, not every rich person has a sense of charity, thats why rich become richer and poor become poorer. As a result the gap between two community increased day by day. Dishonesty and hate destroy the society norms and every person's security is on stake.

On the flip side, being rich make you independent and make your social status high.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You state a clear overall view in the opening: “I completely agree,” and you give relevant reasons, including stronger community bonds, reduced deprivation and the possibility of lower crime. However, the response addresses the question only partially. The task asks whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich, but the final point that wealth brings independence and social status is not explained or weighed against your main argument. Your qualification—that not every rich person is willing to help—is relevant, yet it is asserted rather than supported with an example or explanation. The response is also 82 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to develop and support the ideas. Extend the discussion and make the comparison central to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: you begin with your position, develop several benefits of helping others, and introduce a contrasting point with “On the flip side.” This gives the reader a basic sense of direction. However, the response has no clear overall progression, and the final paragraph is only one sentence, so the contrast is not developed or connected back to your main claim. Several ideas are crowded together in one paragraph, while links such as “As a result” do not always make the relationship between claims clear. The repeated use of “and” also makes the argument feel like a list. Use separate paragraphs for your main argument and counterpoint, and explain how each point supports your answer to the question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “generous act,” “community bond,” “deprivation,” and “social status.” These choices show an effort to discuss social effects rather than relying only on very basic terms. However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors make parts difficult to understand, such as “A bunch amount of people,” “Poor people's confidence insrease on rich people,” and “have no gruges againt rish people.” Some expressions are also imprecise, including “upgrade the status” and “at some extent.” Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “many people believe,” “confidence in wealthy people,” and “to some extent.” Proofreading spelling and choosing collocations carefully would make your ideas clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use some simple sentences and attempt to connect ideas in longer structures, for example, “I completely agree with this statement but the problem is that not every rich person is willing to help others.” This shows an effort to express a qualification. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and frequent errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction can make meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “Helping others … and upgrade,” “It help,” “being rich make you,” and “the gap … increased.” The long sequence of claims in the main paragraph also needs clearer sentence boundaries and punctuation. Practise checking that subjects and verbs agree, and build a few accurate complex sentences using clauses such as “although” or “because” rather than joining many claims together.
