IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued that opportunities to help others is the most important aspect of being rich.
Being Rich, is a priviledge that definitely gives a person the upper hand when it comes to helping other people.
Rich people possess wealth well beyond what they need to satisfy their basic cravings. They can help others voluntarily in a lot of aspects, like establishing a community school to educated underpriviledged students. Or they can also establish a community clinic to treat the needy.
Often times the poor cannot afford basic medical costs for their family and lose their loved ones. Also when the poor peoples siblings are denied of basic educational rights due to being poor, they cannot break free from the poverty cycle. That is where the rich can play a vital role.
On the other hand, the people who are not rich cannot perceive greater good for the society or futurisitic infrastructures simply because they cannot afford to to travel the world and see the progress of other countries. The people who are rich can spare some money to see these things and can work with the government in public-private projects to contribute to the wellbeing of their own country.
The middle class and poor people go through a cycle where they get so much invested in trying to secure meals for their family, that they cannot have the bandwidth to see the bigger picture of life.
All in all, the rich definitely gets access to conditions and tools that puts them in a good position for help others and contribute for the betterment of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that wealth is valuable because it enables people to help others, and you support this with examples such as funding schools and clinics. You also extend the argument to public-private projects and national development, so the response remains relevant to the question. However, the discussion focuses mainly on what rich people can do, rather than examining how important this is compared with other benefits of being rich. The claims about poorer people being unable to see the “bigger picture” or contribute to society are broad and need qualification or evidence. Develop these points with a specific example and explain more directly why helping others is the most important aspect, rather than simply one advantage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall progression: it introduces the view, gives examples of charitable support, considers wider social contributions, and ends with a summary. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “All in all” signal transitions. However, the contrast introduced by “On the other hand” is not fully clear, since the paragraph continues to explain the advantages of wealth rather than presenting a distinct opposing view. Some ideas also run together, particularly the discussion of poverty, education, and the poverty cycle. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the main claim. More precise referencing would also help readers follow links between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “underprivileged,” “poverty cycle,” “public-private projects,” and “wellbeing.” These choices allow you to discuss both direct assistance and broader social development. There are also attempts at less common expressions, although some are inaccurate or awkward: “basic cravings” is not a natural way to describe essential needs, and “futurisitic infrastructures” is unclear in this context. Spelling errors such as “priviledge,” “underpriviledged,” and “futurisitic” reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe essential needs as “basic necessities” and refer to “future infrastructure projects.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style explanation of how poverty limits opportunity and a relative clause in “the people who are rich.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “opportunities to help others is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the rich definitely gets” should use a plural verb. The sentence beginning “Often times the poor…” also needs clearer punctuation, and “puts them in a good position for help” has an incorrect grammatical pattern. Review agreement, sentence boundaries, and verb patterns. Greater control of these forms would make your argument smoother without changing its ideas.
