IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that the most important thing about being rich is that the individual has a chance to be benificial to others. I will discuss this view by giving my personal opinions for the same.

To begin with, I completely agree that wealthy people have an opportunity to help people who are in need. Not only they are rich by money or luxury but also by heart. They often make charity donations to help poor people. In addition, they are very humble in nature. They don't like to show off unlike others. They show kindness by thier actions. For example, there is a guy near my residence who owns a huge bunglow and lives with his family. I have often seen him distributing clothes, groceries and other necessary items in a slum area. They are usually very kind and tries to be useful to others not just in quantity but as well as quality wise.

On the other hand, there are people who does nothing but brag about their richies. Though they are rich but their personality is completely opposite. They spend their money unnecessarily without having a second thought while the real one spends carefully. These people are diverted by branded and expensive items just to act cool in front of others. As a result, it has a negative impact on their childern. For example, someone I know whose dad owns a large scale company and the boy is very ungrateful, instead he spoils his friends with the money earned by his father and spends recklessily.

Taking everything into account, I would like to conclude this view that I believe that rich people should help others whenever they get chance and without having any selfishness in mind. No one has ever became poor by helping others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that helping others is an important benefit of wealth, and you support this with examples of charitable giving and a contrasting example of wasteful spending. The response is relevant and addresses the question, but it does not fully explore the phrase “the most important thing.” Much of the discussion describes how rich people behave rather than weighing helping others against other benefits of wealth or explaining why it is the most important one. The examples are understandable, though the neighbour’s actions are more developed than the point about the ungrateful son. To strengthen the response, explain the significance of each example and directly compare helping others with other possible advantages of being rich.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “Taking everything into account” make the main stages easy to follow, and the examples generally appear beside the points they illustrate. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some effective progression. However, connections within sentences are occasionally awkward or mechanical, as in “Not only they are rich by money or luxury but also by heart,” and the shift from describing wealthy people generally to specific individuals could be signposted more clearly. The conclusion also repeats the position rather than drawing together the contrast. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and vary referencing to avoid repeated “they” and “these people.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You communicate the main ideas using relevant vocabulary such as “charity donations,” “distributing clothes,” “branded and expensive items,” and “negative impact.” However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “rich,” “people,” and “help,” and several inaccurate choices or spellings reduce precision: “benificial,” “bunglow,” “richies,” and “recklessily.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “useful to others not just in quantity but as well as quality wise” and “diverted by branded and expensive items.” These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they keep the vocabulary from being consistently accurate and flexible. Choose more precise expressions, such as “financially support,” “display their wealth,” and “spend recklessly,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including contrast with “Though” and a result clause beginning “As a result.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Not only they are rich” needs inversion (“Not only are they rich”), while “They are usually very kind and tries” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “people who does nothing,” the verb should agree with the plural subject, and “No one has ever became poor” requires the past participle “become.” There are also awkward sentence constructions, such as “I would like to conclude this view that I believe.” Work on agreement, verb forms, and sentence patterns, while retaining the complex structures you attempt.
