IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals believe that when a person is social and econimically affluent stands in a better position to help the destitutes in a society. I completely agree with this notion becauuse wealthy people have a surplus goods to give to less disadvantaged in a community.
On the one hand, people who think that financially stable individuals should not donate to the needy argue that this may results in overdependence in society. Persons who rely on charity donations from donors develop an habit of relaxation and wait for aids from wealth people. This behavior creates a lazy class of people in the community,as they depend on others to get basic goods like food and clothing. For instance, in Kenya many poor people rely on donations from affluent politicians and they found lining up in houses of politicians to get food. While helping needy persons is crucial in promoting social well-being, people should not perceive to be compulsory to be assisted by weathy individuals.
On the other hand, I totally contend that most affluent persons in the society should extend their hands in helping the less fortunate. First of all, the rich in society have extra materials they afford to donate to others in need. When suplus goods are not donated they may lie unsused hence getting damaged or some rot . For example during bumber harvest wealth persons can donate their surplus to an orphanage. Consequently, it creates a caring environment in society and members would live in harmony. Furthermore, the rich in society should help the needy in order to bridge the gap of social classes. Poor people in community would feel isolated when they are not supported . if this is ignored it will create economic gap in society.
In conclusion, while rich persons in society helping the needy will create overdependence in society and people may stop striving to survive, I believe wealthy class helping others helps to reduce economic gap between the poor and the rich when donations are done without offending the needy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that wealth creates an opportunity to help others, and the conclusion returns to this view. You address both the potential drawback of dependence and the benefits of giving, with relevant examples such as food donations during a bumper harvest and support for an orphanage. This covers the task well, and the social-class argument adds a further reason for your position. However, the counterargument about dependence is developed more fully than the response to it: you could explain how donations can be designed to support independence, rather than simply noting that assistance should not be compulsory. The claim that giving bridges social divisions also needs a clearer explanation of how this happens.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the overall direction easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, some links are mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always explicit. For example, the move from surplus goods to a “caring environment” would be clearer if you explained the connection. The final sentence also combines the drawback and your main argument in a way that makes the conclusion harder to process. Use clearer referencing and more precise transitions, and organise each body paragraph around one main claim followed by explanation and evidence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “overdependence,” “surplus goods,” “social well-being,” and “economic gap,” and you attempt some less common expressions. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “a habit of relaxation” for dependence on assistance, “wealth people,” and “lining up in houses of politicians.” There are also spelling errors such as “econimically,” “suplus,” and “unsused.” These issues keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise, even though your meaning is generally recoverable. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common word partnerships, such as “wealthy people,” “rely on donations,” and “bridge the gap between social classes.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While” and “when,” and most of your ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur across the response, particularly with verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence boundaries. For example, “this may results” should use the base verb after “may,” while “an habit” needs the correct article. In “they found lining up,” the verb form does not fit the sentence, and “it will create economic gap” is missing an article. Punctuation is also inconsistent, especially around commas and sentence starts. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, then review articles and verb forms; this will make your varied structures more controlled.
