IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

having the opportunity to help others is a blessing a person can give , while to have the ressources to contribute or not is a major decision ,some people say the most important thing about being rich is to give back to society ,while some say being wealthy or not can also be helpfull to others , this essay will discuss both views ,as i personnely believe that helping others is a good thing rich or not.

those who have their wealth built or given to them by heritage often use their ressources to contribute to society by building hospitals, schools ,buy people home-morgatges as it feels wrong to have a lot of money and not give some back for instance charities events where often people with great wealth donate high amounts to associations who make a difference in world .

yet on the other hand being rich or not has nothing to do with helping others its all about the morals and the great deed we often see people recieve for giving to others , either from low income families contribute to society it depends on the community and the ethics it brings for example we often see in the muslim community that donation from all classes being collected during holidays or even at time of crisis at it creates the bond the put themall in the same road ,in my point of view its necessary to teach the upcoming generetion that helping others is a positive thing for both parties either with money or what u can give for the greater good.

in conclusion both ideas serve their own argument on whish is important ,i strongly believe that with wealth or not its important to help others .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the central issue and give a recognisable position: you believe helping others matters “with wealth or not.” The response also considers both the role of wealthy donors and the idea that generosity depends on morals rather than income, with examples such as hospitals, schools, and community donations. However, the task asks specifically to what extent you agree that the opportunity to help others is the most important aspect of being rich. Your discussion shifts toward whether anyone can help, so the importance of this opportunity in relation to other benefits of wealth is not fully examined. Several points, including the charity example, are asserted rather than explained. State your degree of agreement clearly and develop each reason with a more direct link to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic essay structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “on the other hand,” and a conclusion. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and the contrast between wealthy people’s contributions and generosity across income groups is relevant. However, progression within paragraphs is difficult to follow because several ideas are joined into long, loosely connected sentences. For example, the discussion of donations in the Muslim community moves quickly from holidays and crises to social bonds and teaching the next generation. Linking phrases such as “for instance” and “in conclusion” are present, but connections between claims are sometimes unclear or mechanical. Use one main point per paragraph, order its explanation and example clearly, and make references such as “it” and “them” unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “contribute to society,” “heritage,” “charities,” “low income families,” and “greater good.” These choices show an effort to discuss wealth, giving, and community rather than relying entirely on basic terms. However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors make parts of the response harder to understand, such as “ressources,” “helpfull,” “personnely,” and “buy people home-morgatges.” Some expressions are also imprecise: “a blessing a person can give” does not clearly express the intended idea, and “great deed we often see people recieve” is difficult to interpret. Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing standard collocations, and use more precise terms for donations, charitable organisations, and financial assistance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including a contrast between the two views and a sentence beginning “those who have their wealth built or given to them by heritage.” This shows an effort to move beyond short, simple statements. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and verb forms frequently make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “either from low income families contribute to society” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “donation from all classes being collected” does not form a complete clause. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing sentence capitals. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine them using accurate subordinate clauses and check that every clause has a subject and a finite verb.
