IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Being advantaged financially can place one in a position to assist the less fortunate. I completely agree with this opinion because being rich can help one create a flexible financial budget that gives room for donations. In addition, a wealthy man is an inspiration to many, their achievements and possessions command respect and many individuals might find inspiration in their journey to wealth creation, making them role models in society.

One significant reason why having more than enough is the ability to give away material possessions such as clothes, food or paying school fees to the disadvantaged. When a person can afford to buy clothes frequantly, they might be in a position to donate previously worn clothes to orphanages or to friends and relatives who might be in need. They can easily replace the donated items without their wardrobes sufferering any loss. These items might benefit the new owners who might have otherwise lacked the essential clothes. At the same time, a financially able individual can decide to occassionally buy food to the needy, hence saving them from hunger. For instance, a wealthy family member can decide to pay tuition fee to struggling children in that community , thereby making them attain professional qualifications. This would in the long run make the students gain entry into a career and earn salary that would improve their economic status.

That being said, most rich people are considered successful and many look up to them. People who have acquired their wealth through hardwork by either their talents or businesses normally have a work ethic and virtues worth emulating. Many of them may have suffered losses but still picked themselves up from failure. For this reason, mant young people may admire their tract record and feel encouraged to keep perservering despite encountering challenges. A prolific footballer, for examle, who has lost many matches but kept pursuing their career until they win a major game like World Cup, may serve as an inspiration to upcoming athletes. Thus, acting as a mentor to many. They may get invited to give talks to schools and mentor struggling organisations. In this way, they help lift the spirit of many people.

In conclusion, being rich offers numerous advantages and the most essential ones are; being able to provide material needs and offering inspiration. Therefore, gaining more wealth should not only be for personal gain and satisfaction, but also for giving back to the community.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you completely agree that wealth matters because it enables practical assistance and can make people role models. Both reasons are relevant and supported with examples, including donating clothes, paying tuition, and an athlete inspiring young people. This gives the response a clear, developed argument. However, the claim that wealthy people’s achievements and possessions “command respect” is broad, and the essay could examine more directly whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich, rather than simply one benefit. The discussion of role models also relies on successful people having admirable work ethics, which is not true of every wealthy person. A more qualified explanation would make the reasoning more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay is organised into a clear introduction, two body paragraphs presenting distinct reasons, and a conclusion that restates the position. The progression from direct material support to inspiration is easy to follow, and signposts such as “In addition,” “That being said,” and “For this reason” help connect the argument. Within the first body paragraph, the examples move logically from clothing to food and education. Some linking is less smooth: “Thus, acting as a mentor to many” is a fragment-like transition, and the conclusion’s list after “the most essential ones are” feels slightly mechanical. There is also some repetition of “might” and “many.” More varied referencing and tighter links between examples and the central claim would make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “the less fortunate,” “economic status,” “work ethic,” and “professional qualifications.” These choices help explain both charitable support and the influence of successful people. You also attempt more specific expressions, but some are inaccurate or awkward: “create a flexible financial budget” is not a natural way to describe having money available to donate, while “their tract record” appears to mean “track record.” Spelling slips such as “frequantly,” “occassionally,” and “perservering” also reduce accuracy. The meaning remains clear, but more reliable collocations and careful proofreading would improve precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“When a person can afford…”) and relative clauses (“who might have otherwise lacked…”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the range supports the examples. Some grammatical errors remain. In “without their wardrobes sufferering any loss,” the verb after “without” needs a gerund form; “without their wardrobes suffering any loss” is the intended structure. “A wealthy family member… thereby making them attain…” has an unclear pronoun reference, and “Thus, acting as a mentor to many” is not a complete sentence. There are also agreement and punctuation issues, such as “a wealthy man… their achievements” and spaces before commas. Greater control of sentence boundaries and references would strengthen accuracy.
