IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

This is an intresting argument being rich has oppurtunity to help others, I have to think deeply about that choose a side where i should agree this point or disagree. What I think is to help others you dont to be rich, its just take a good heart to help others without any expection.

At some point i would like to agree to this statement, yes in some point of life being rich gives you a power to not just help others but also your closed ones. money has power to help in your materialstic things at some some point money plays a cruicial role in helping others for instance in your relation admitted in hospital going trough some serious condition amd for there treatment it required a large amount of money at that point you can help them by paying there medical bills with rich with money you can help others by stading with there in tough situiation

And at some point i have to disagree with you rich in money is not all thing you can help others there are otherways to help others . There is somethong we call rich of heart with money you can only help other by donating maybe you feel good by doing that but if you cant feel or understand there problen there is no point of helping other without understand the issue its more lie you are doing a favour not doing help, so yeah at some point i would disagree that only havinga wealth gives you opportunity to help others. Sometimes just beign with then at their lows also help them the most because even you dont have money but you have been there when they need emotional support.

In the end i like to end this with a opne simple answer is that , money is important to help others but without understanding there situation its more like charity, so the most important thing is about to be rich in money with a good heart both are are equally important and bot gives you equal opportunity help others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both sides of the claim and give a recognisable position: money can help with practical needs, but emotional support and understanding also matter. The hospital example, where someone can pay medical bills, is relevant and helps explain why wealth can be useful. However, the position shifts between agreeing and disagreeing, and the final view—that wealth and a good heart are equally important—could be stated more clearly from the introduction and maintained throughout. Several points are asserted rather than fully explained, such as the claim that donating without understanding someone’s problem is merely doing a favour. Develop this contrast with a clearer explanation or example, and make your degree of agreement explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting different views, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the main stages of your argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in the long hospital example, where several ideas run together. Linking phrases such as “At some point” and “at some point of life” are repeated, while “And at some point” does not clearly signal how the next idea relates to the previous one. Some references, including “this statement” and “there,” are not always precise. Use clearer topic sentences, divide long explanations into shorter units, and choose linking expressions that show contrast or cause accurately.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “medical bills,” “emotional support,” “donating,” and “charity,” and the contrast between being “rich in money” and “rich of heart” helps communicate your central idea. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “help others” and “at some point.” Frequent spelling errors and inaccurate word choices—such as “expection,” “materialstic things,” and “closed ones”—make parts of the response harder to understand and reduce precision. Aim to check spelling carefully and use more natural collocations. For example, describe wealth as providing “financial means” to support someone, and explain that empathy helps you understand their “circumstances.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including clauses that explain reasons and examples. However, many sentences contain errors in sentence boundaries, verb forms, articles, and agreement, so the reader sometimes has to work to identify the intended meaning. For instance, the opening sentence joins several ideas without clear punctuation, and “you dont to be rich” has an incorrect verb pattern. In the hospital example, the sentence beginning “money has power” continues through several clauses without a clear structure. Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea, then add a correctly formed reason or example. Check articles and verb patterns, and use full stops to separate complete thoughts.
