IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is often argued that the most valuable thing people who are wealthy can do is to help others. In my opinion, I completely disagree with this view because there are a lot of important things and opportunities which they can do.

Being rich is not mean that your only important thing is to help others beacuse you have many ways. There are more other options and necessary things which wealthy people have do. They have many responsibilities and important tasks to complete. They have to attened different meetings which are very essential for their bussiness. They have to do valuable agreements with other companies and different peoples to secure their wealth and role.

Sometimes, it is easier to say that if i was rich i can be able to help everyone but reality is that you have to do other most important things too. Helping anyone who is needy or someone who want a precious chance in his life is really good and soothing but it is not only important thing to do for everyone who is rich. All the people who are mostly rich are really hard working and some are really kind enough to help others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You state a clear position—“I completely disagree”—and give relevant reasons, including wealthy people’s business responsibilities and the value of helping those in need. However, the response addresses the question only partially: it does not explain clearly what other things are more important, or why helping others should not be considered the most valuable opportunity. The examples about meetings and agreements are asserted rather than developed, and the final point that some rich people are hardworking or kind does not strengthen the argument sufficiently. The response is also 51 words below the required minimum, limiting the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop each reason with a specific example and a clearer link to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction gives your opinion, the next paragraph discusses business responsibilities, and the final paragraph considers helping others. This makes the main direction understandable. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited, and several ideas are placed together without clear explanation of how they connect. For example, meetings, agreements, wealth, and social role are listed in sequence rather than developed as a connected argument. Linking phrases such as “Sometimes” and “but” help signal contrast, though “There are more other options” is unclear and the repeated use of “important” makes the progression feel repetitive. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to your central claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “wealthy,” “responsibilities,” “agreements,” and “needy,” so the reader can follow the general argument. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “do valuable agreements,” “different peoples,” and “a precious chance.” Repetition of “important,” “help,” and “rich” also restricts precision. Spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “attened,” and “bussiness” are noticeable and reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Build a wider set of accurate expressions for business duties and charitable support, and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would make your reasons clearer without changing your basic ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including a contrast with “but” and a conditional idea beginning “if I was rich.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. Examples include “Being rich is not mean,” “people have do,” and “if I was rich I can be able,” where verb forms and sentence patterns are not controlled. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “it is not only important thing to do.” Some sentences run together or lack punctuation, while capitalisation is inconsistent. Practise accurate basic patterns first, then add complex clauses—for example, use a correctly formed conditional and check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb.
