IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I would agree with this statment that being rich gives you multiple opportunity to help other. Being rich in this modren world is as important as having a water in your life. Being rich opens many other opportunity for you. But there are always two sides of a coin being rich also open doors to bad things but also give you opportunity to help people who are sturggles to meet there ends and do it without execpting anything in return that what make you the real rich. I would like to share a story of mine when my father passed away when i was 18 years old. We were living in Abbottabad a city in Pakistan. when my father passed my family was sturggling to get furnel arrangements thats when my uncle come into rescue helping us with basic needs and get the arrangements done. What i mean to say is that my uncle was rich he had opportunity to help and he did. So I strongly agree with the statement that important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help other. But i would that everyperson in world should be capable of providing there family with needs and work hard enough you entrie life that in late age of your life you dont have to ask for any help from anyone. if we are taking help of person make sure that you should return his favour in a good way and stay humble thats the key. Thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you agree that wealth matters because it enables people to help others, and the story about your uncle supporting your family after your father’s death gives the argument a relevant personal example. However, the response addresses the task only partially because it does not explain in much depth why helping others is the most important aspect of being rich, or consider other possible benefits and priorities. The advice about providing for one’s family and returning favours introduces related ideas but their connection to the question is not fully explained. The response is also 239 words, below the required 250; the 13 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Develop your reasoning and add a further relevant explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable progression from your agreement, to a personal example, and then to a concluding reflection. The story helps connect your opinion to a concrete situation. However, ideas are presented in one continuous paragraph, so the reader has little visual guidance through the argument. Several transitions are abrupt: “But there are always two sides of a coin” leads to contrasting claims without clearly explaining the contrast, and the shift from your uncle’s help to advice about repaying favours is not fully signposted. Some linking words, especially “but” and “and,” carry too much of the organisational work. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting explanation and example, and conclusion; make each transition show the precise relationship between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “opportunity,” “basic needs,” “help,” and “return his favour,” and the family story makes your meaning generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “rich,” “opportunity,” and “help.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as “statment,” “modren,” “sturggling,” and “meet there ends,” which can distract the reader. Some expressions are not natural in this context, including “having a water in your life” and “that what make you the real rich.” Build a more precise range for discussing wealth, responsibility and support, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a complex sentence beginning “when my father passed away when i was 18 years old.” This shows an effort to connect events and explain your reasoning. However, the range is limited, and attempts to combine several ideas often produce faulty sentence structures or unclear punctuation. For example, “But there are always two sides of a coin being rich also open doors…” joins contrasting ideas without a clear grammatical boundary. There are also recurring errors in agreement, articles and sentence formation, as in “my uncle come into rescue” and “that what make you.” Practise building accurate complex sentences with clear clauses, and check verb forms, subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries.
