IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Maybe the best thing about being rich is to be able to help others but in my opinion the definition of help is not that in order to help others you have to be rich,if you are kind and respectful most of the time people need that rather than giving them money. However, there are two sides of it.

Firstly if a person is rich then he has a plus point to help others and in my opinion rather than giving money to people he can give it to charity to schools, rehabilitation centers and hospitals where money is spend to help specific people.

On the other hand in order to help others one doesnt need to be rich, help doesn't mean you giveout money to every person you saw on the street, picking something harmful from the streets is also help ,that is just a basic example. One can help other by sharing positive knowledge with them , giving them a righ direction is sometime a person mostly needed, giving a reference is the most helpful thing a person can do.

If we think out of the box this phrase has added to our minded that if you want to help others, you have to be rich which is the main reason for our downfall. It should be the priority of government to stabilize economy and overcome poverty in the nation, the most helpful think we can do is to guide and educate someone that is on the wrong path.If every person thinks like a humanitarian the world would be a beautiful place to live.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partly accept that wealth enables help, but argue that kindness, guidance and education can also support others. This addresses the question and is supported with relevant examples, including donating to schools, rehabilitation centres and hospitals, and helping by sharing knowledge. However, the discussion develops the value of non-financial help more fully than the claim about whether this is the most important benefit of being rich. The point about government responsibility and poverty is relevant but arrives late and is not clearly connected to your central comparison. To strengthen the response, explain more directly why helping others is—or is not—the most important advantage of wealth, and develop each main reason with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about how wealth can help, a contrasting paragraph about non-financial help, and a concluding statement. Linking phrases such as “Firstly” and “On the other hand” make the contrast easy to follow. However, some connections are mechanical, and the long opening sentence combines several ideas without clear punctuation. The final paragraph introduces government policy and the economy, which interrupts the focus on personal acts of help rather than extending the comparison. Some references, such as “this phrase,” are not fully clear. Use shorter, more controlled sentences, make each paragraph’s central point explicit, and connect the conclusion directly to the position stated in the introduction.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for discussing wealth and social support, including “rehabilitation centers,” “poverty,” “humanitarian,” and “educate.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, such as “a plus point,” “giveout money,” “a righ direction,” and “the most helpful think.” Some expressions are also vague, including “added to our minded” and “something harmful from the streets.” Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and check spelling and word forms carefully. For example, describe the specific action involved in helping rather than relying on broad or unclear expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If every person thinks like a humanitarian, the world would be a beautiful place to live.” This gives the response some variety, and the main message remains understandable. However, some errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles and verb forms reduce accuracy. The opening is a run-on sentence, while “money is spend” and “one doesnt need” show problems with verb form and apostrophe use. In “giving them a righ direction is sometime a person mostly needed,” the sentence structure is difficult to follow. Use full stops to separate complete ideas, review subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and proofread punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
