IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, there has been a debate among the people about whether rich people have more opportunities to help others. I agree with this idea and want to express my point of view on this because rich people have access to many places where middle-class or lower-class people cannot afford to go; for instance, universities and colleges, which have very high fees but offer the best quality of education, are often out of reach for middle-class people, so rich people can support students from lower-income backgrounds so they can complete their education.

The elite people also have leverage over resources; they can afford the best quality of food and water, etc. Even while maintaining a high living standard amid increasing inflation, for an average-income family it is very tough to survive. Moreover, the rich can help out their employees by giving them bonuses or a high monthly income to support their families.

For example: Festival bonuses and performance incentives.

Rich people do create opportunities for many people through their companies and factories and support others directly and indirectly. For example, B2B business and transportation

In contrast, I'm against the freebies that poor people get, like free money without doing anything; that is wrong in my perspective and makes people less capable and dependent on others to support them.

In conclusion, I support the statement that the rich have more opportunity to help others, and they should help accordingly, but I'm against the freebies that just give free money to people even if they are not working.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that wealth can create opportunities to help, and you return to this view in the conclusion. The examples of funding education, offering employee bonuses and creating jobs through businesses are relevant to the topic. However, the prompt asks whether helping others is the most important thing about being rich, while much of your response explains how rich people are able to help. Develop the comparison more directly—for example, explain why this opportunity matters more than personal comfort or status. The objection to “freebies” introduces a related but insufficiently explained point, and the claim that rich people can access better food and water does not clearly show how this supports others. Clarifying and extending these ideas would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an identifiable overall structure: an introduction, supporting points, a contrasting view and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For example” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is uneven. The education example is attached to a very long opening sentence, while “For example: Festival bonuses and performance incentives” is presented as a fragment rather than integrated into the paragraph. The brief reference to B2B business and transportation is also not explained, so its connection to the preceding claim is unclear. The contrast about freebies arrives abruptly and is not clearly linked to the central argument. Use separate, focused paragraphs and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “lower-income backgrounds,” “leverage over resources,” “performance incentives” and “dependent.” These choices help communicate ideas about wealth, employment and support. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “debate among the people” is vague, “the best quality of food and water” does not express the intended point clearly, and “B2B business” is not sufficiently specific in this context. “Freebies” is informal for an academic essay, while “free money” is repeated. Aim for more precise, formal phrasing and avoid using broad labels where a specific example would be clearer. Your meaning is generally understandable, but more controlled collocations would strengthen the academic tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “universities and colleges, which have very high fees” and a conditional-purpose construction in “so they can complete their education.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some sentence construction and punctuation issues reduce control. The opening sentence is overloaded, joining the position, explanation and example in one long structure. “For example: Festival bonuses and performance incentives” is not a complete sentence, and the following “For example, B2B business and transportation” is also a fragment. The sentence beginning “Even while maintaining a high living standard” has an unclear subject relationship. Break long sentences into clearer units, and make sure examples are grammatically integrated with the claims they illustrate.
