IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

To have the opportunity to help others, one should be rich. I partially agree with this statement because, in my opinion, if we have more money, we can help others easily, but on the other hand, helping others does not primarily rely on being rich.

The positive thing about being rich is that we don`t have to worry about spending on others. We can help people financially if we are rich. The biggest problem people face in this time of inflation is to have money to fullfill their needs. In such cases, if we have enough amount of money, we can easily help others mainly by helping them financially.

For example, A rich business man can give the financial freedom to poor people by supporting their kids education.

On the other hand, helping others is not totally dependent on being rich. People do not always require a financial support. Elderly people may need physical support during road crossing, a friend may need an emotional support during times of distress or a stray cat may need a piece of bread if he is hungry. None of them require money but they still need help.

Helping such needy people does not require us to be rich, they can be helped by anyone even the poor ones.

For example, Leaving your seat for a pragnant lady in a publuc transport if the seats are full is great form of help anyone can offer.

In conclusion, Being rich gives us the advantage to help others financilly but as human everyone has a lot more needs that money can not fullfill.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you partially agree because wealth makes financial help easier, while helping is not dependent on wealth. Both sides are relevant and supported with examples, including a businessperson funding children’s education and offering practical help to an elderly person or a pregnant passenger. This addresses the main question, but the discussion is not equally developed: the financial argument is largely repeated, and the examples are asserted rather than explored in detail. The conclusion restates the contrast but does not explain more precisely how you weigh the two kinds of help. Develop each main idea with a clearer explanation of its impact and make your degree of agreement more explicit in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “The positive thing” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. The examples generally follow the points they illustrate, so the reader can follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical, and ideas within paragraphs could be linked more smoothly. For instance, the first body paragraph moves from inflation to financial assistance and then to education without fully explaining the links. The sentence “Helping such needy people does not require us to be rich, they can be helped by anyone” also joins two complete ideas with only a comma, weakening the flow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and transitions that show cause, contrast, or consequence rather than relying mainly on basic signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range to discuss financial and non-financial assistance, including “financial freedom,” “emotional support,” and “times of distress.” These choices help distinguish different forms of help. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision: “enough amount of money” is unnatural, “a financial support” uses an unnecessary article, and “fullfill” is misspelled. There are also repeated uses of “help” and “rich,” where more specific wording could make the argument more fluent. Aim to learn common collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise alternatives for describing assistance and people in need would strengthen the vocabulary without requiring overly complex language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures such as “if we have more money, we can help others” and contrast clauses introduced by “but” and “on the other hand.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, however. In “Helping such needy people does not require us to be rich, they can be helped by anyone,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. The opening “To have the opportunity to help others, one should be rich” also shifts from “one” to “we” in the next sentence, making the reference less consistent. Review sentence boundaries, articles, and consistent pronoun use while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
