IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals believe that a highlight of being rich is to have the opportunity to help others. I do not agree with this view because the most important "thing" is relative for each person. For some people the most important might be to have prestige, while for others could be the possibility to own anything they want.

To be able to explain my view, first we have to define "thing" and for me is related to the most important quality of being rich. Saying that, the most important quality could vary from person to person making it hard to generalize that statement. For example, if all the rich people consider helping others as the best quality, there will not be poor people in the world.

In contrast, different people find different advantages of being rich as the mos important one, and not just the same reason for everyone. This variety creates diversity and people will spend their money in different ways. For example, some people enjoy the prestige that money can give to them and spend it in luxury intems, while other people might be enjoying the posibility to buy anything they feel like it, such as cars, houses, island, and so on.

To conclude, every person is different and for that reason they will probably like different "things" of being rich. For that reason I cannot agree with the statement. At the same time, if that statment was real, the world would be a more equal place with less poberty and more solidarity and emphaty.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree because what matters most about wealth differs between individuals. You address the prompt and give relevant examples, including prestige, luxury purchases, and the freedom to buy desired items. However, the central reasoning is not fully developed. The claim that if rich people valued helping others, “there will not be poor people” is too absolute and does not explain why helping others cannot be the most important benefit for some wealthy people. The final sentence also introduces a potentially stronger point—that greater generosity could reduce poverty and increase solidarity—but leaves it unexplored. Develop this tension and explain more directly why personal priorities outweigh the opportunity to help others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs explain it, and the conclusion returns to your position. Examples are generally placed alongside the ideas they support, so the reader can follow the main argument. However, progression is sometimes mechanical: “For that reason” is repeated in the introduction and conclusion, while “In contrast” does not clearly signal a contrast with the preceding paragraph. Some references are also unclear, such as “that statement” and “the best quality,” because the exact idea being referred to is not always explicit. To improve, make the relationship between each paragraph’s point and the next one more precise, and use linking expressions only when their logical function is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss wealth and personal priorities, including “prestige,” “diversity,” “luxury,” and “solidarity.” These choices show some range beyond basic terms. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “a highlight of being rich” is not a natural way to express the main benefit, “luxury intems” contains a spelling error, and “the mos important” and “poberty” are also misspelled. Phrases such as “buy anything they feel like it” and “the possibility to own anything” are understandable but imprecise or awkward. Aim for more natural expressions and proofread carefully, especially for spelling and repeated wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional sentence (“if all the rich people consider helping others as the best quality…”) and clauses introduced by “while.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “for me is related” is missing a subject, and “while for others could be” also lacks a clear subject and verb structure. In “some people enjoy … while other people might be enjoying,” the verb forms are not well matched; “might enjoy” would be more consistent. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction in “such as cars, houses, island.” Work on complete clauses, parallel structures, and accurate article and plural use while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
