Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the three habits and make some relevant comparisons, including café visits being above 60% in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart, and instant coffee exceeding 50% in Brisbane and Hobart. However, the overview is not consistently accurate: fresh coffee was not the most popular habit overall; café visits were highest in four cities and close to the top in Adelaide. The claim that Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart had the highest fresh-coffee figures is also misleading, since Sydney and Melbourne were highest, while Hobart was below both. The final statement that the cities were not far apart is too general to summarise the main patterns. Select the clearest overall trends and support them with accurate comparisons across all three categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to organise the response with an opening, an overview and a concluding sentence, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Secondly” and “To sum up” show an effort to guide the reader. However, most of the information is packed into one long, difficult-to-follow paragraph, with several comparisons joined together without clear boundaries. The sequence also shifts between categories and cities, so the reader has to work to identify which figures belong to which habit. Some linking phrases are used mechanically or do not create a clear relationship between ideas. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the detailed comparisons, and organise the body by habit or by city, with shorter sentences and clearer transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “habit,” “users” and “accounted for,” and attempts more expressive phrases such as “the lion’s share” and “in stark contrast.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing survey data. “The most famous habit” does not mean the most common, and “the most users by percentage” is awkward. Repeated use of “percentage” and “cities” also makes the account less precise. Aim for standard chart language such as “the highest proportion,” “residents who bought,” and “the figure stood at.” More accurate collocations will make the comparisons clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine ideas using longer structures, for example in the sentence beginning “Overall” and the comparison introduced by “wherease.” However, these extended sentences are often difficult to control, and the response contains frequent errors in sentence boundaries, agreement and article use. Examples include “the city Hobart and Brisbane is,” “in the last category habit we had went,” and “between each others.” The opening also has a misplaced space before the full stop and runs into the next sentence without a space. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms, then add complex clauses only when their structure is secure.
