Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the highest and lowest points for each category. However, the overview is missing; a summary of the most significant trends is essential for a higher band. While you have selected key data points, the comparison between cities could be more structured. For example, you mention Sydney and Brisbane at the end, but the comparison is slightly confusing due to spelling errors and lack of clear grouping. To improve, ensure you provide a clear overview paragraph after the introduction that highlights the general trends across the five cities.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into two paragraphs, but it lacks a clear introduction and a distinct overview. The progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical, relying on simple connectors like 'However' and 'While'. The use of cohesive devices is limited, and the paragraphing is insufficient to separate the different categories of data effectively. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', 'Conversely') and ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, such as one for cafe visits and another for coffee/tea purchasing habits.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it is somewhat repetitive and contains several spelling errors (e.g., 'Hobard' instead of 'Hobart', 'Sidney' instead of 'Sydney', 'Brisbone' instead of 'Brisbane'). You rely on basic verbs like 'went to' and 'buy'. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to data reporting, such as 'consumed', 'purchased', 'accounted for', or 'the proportion of'. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but the errors in proper nouns and basic vocabulary limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'The chart illustrates about' (should be 'illustrates'), 'just edge over' (should be 'just edged over'), and 'in their last four weeks' (should be 'in the last four weeks'). These errors do not generally impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past data. Ensure you proofread for small articles and preposition errors.
