Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task but lacks a clear overview of the main trends. While you mention specific figures, the selection of data is somewhat disjointed, and the comparisons are not fully developed. For instance, you mention that Melbourne was at its 'peak' without clearly contrasting it with the other cities or providing a cohesive summary of the overall patterns. The description of trends is also slightly confusing; for example, stating that buying instant coffee 'inclined slightly in the Melbourne and climbed rapidly in the Brisbane' is vague and lacks the precision required for a Band 6 or higher. To improve, ensure you identify the most significant differences and similarities across the five cities rather than listing individual data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is weak. The transition between sentences is often mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices is limited. Phrases like 'Apart from this' and 'Further looking at the chart' are used, but they do not always effectively link the information in a way that guides the reader through the data. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the comparison between the cities. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You rely on simple verbs like 'buying', 'went', and 'rose'. There is an attempt to use some descriptive language, such as 'inclined' and 'climbed', but these are not always used in the most natural or accurate way in this context. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'a significant proportion'. Additionally, ensure that your word choices are precise and appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'in the Melbourne city people went to for tea or coffee in the last 4 weeks were on its peak' and 'buying instant coffee in last for weeks'. The use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
