Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response provides an overview and attempts to select main features, but it is incomplete. The text cuts off abruptly mid-sentence ('at about'), meaning the data for Hobart and Adelaide is not fully presented or compared. While the introduction and overview are clear, the failure to complete the description of the data significantly impacts the ability to fully address the task. To reach a higher band, ensure all data points mentioned in the prompt are covered and that the report is brought to a logical conclusion. The current response lacks a complete summary of the trends across all five cities.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay uses some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', and 'In terms of', which help to structure the information. Paragraphing is present, though the final paragraph is incomplete. The logical progression is generally clear in the first two paragraphs, but the sudden termination of the text disrupts the overall flow and coherence of the report. To improve, focus on ensuring that each paragraph is fully developed and that the transition between the overview and the detailed body paragraphs is seamless. The use of referencing is generally accurate, though the structure becomes mechanical due to the incomplete nature of the final section.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'proportions', 'registered', and 'constituting'. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'most cities the Australia' (should be 'most cities in Australia') and 'buying and drinking of coffee and tea' (which is slightly wordy). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your range to include more varied synonyms for 'increase', 'decrease', and 'proportion' would be beneficial. Additionally, ensure that collocations are used correctly to avoid minor errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The bar chart illustrate' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'those who bought fresh coffee has the lowest share' (should be 'have'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. The attempt to use complex structures is evident, but the control over these structures is inconsistent. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure that sentence fragments are avoided, especially when describing data trends.
