Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the task but lacks a clear overview and fails to accurately report the data. The student identifies some trends, such as the popularity of cafes, but the description of the data is inconsistent and lacks precision. For instance, the claim that 'fresh coffee' is the lowest category is not clearly supported by specific data points, and the analysis of the cities is fragmented. The inclusion of personal opinion ('people dont want to make thing') is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires an objective summary of the provided information. To improve, focus on grouping data logically and ensuring all comparisons are supported by the figures provided in the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs that lack a logical flow. While there is an attempt at an introduction and body paragraphs, the progression of ideas is weak. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'after that' and 'although'. The referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the five cities. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively separate the different categories of data. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'in contrast', 'consequently') would significantly enhance the clarity and structure of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'things', 'make', and 'highest'. There are several instances of inaccurate word choice, such as 'highest chart in market' and 'bought fresh coffee', which do not accurately describe the data. Spelling errors, such as 'adealide' and 'ownwards', further detract from the quality of the writing. The student struggles to use precise terminology related to data description (e.g., 'proportion', 'percentage', 'trend', 'fluctuate'). To reach a higher band, the student should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to charts and graphs and pay closer attention to accurate spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'the highest of fresh coffee is approximate 44% and lowest is 34%'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the simple sentences used often contain errors that impede the flow of information. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring each sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using articles and prepositions correctly.
