Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart compares the outcomes of a survey about people's coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five major cities in Australia.
It is clear that the number of instant coffee purchased increase in five cities. In contrast, the fresh coffee experienced a decline in city residents in the last 4 weeks.
It is clear that the majority of people went to cafés for coffee and tea in Sydney, Hobart, and Melbourne by over 60%, while we saw a decline in both Brisbane and Adelaide. Moreover, the rates of people who purchased instant coffee demonstrated an upward trend with nearly 50%.
Looking at the chart in more detail, it is evident that the percentage of city residents bought fresh coffee steadily decline over three cities, which are Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, with less than 35%. In contrast, there were gradual increases in Adelaide and Hobart, about 40%, which is greater than Melbourne and Brisbane.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the chart, such as the trends in coffee consumption and café visits. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent and occasionally confusing. For example, the statement that 'the number of instant coffee purchased increase' is vague, and the claim that 'fresh coffee experienced a decline in city residents' is grammatically awkward and unclear. While you have attempted to make comparisons between the five cities, some of the data points mentioned (e.g., 'less than 35%') are not clearly linked to specific trends or categories, making it difficult for the reader to follow the data accurately. To improve, ensure that every figure cited is clearly attributed to the correct category and city.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader navigate the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'In contrast,' 'Moreover,' and 'Looking at the chart in more detail' to transition between ideas. However, the logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes weak. For instance, the second paragraph introduces trends without clearly defining which category of coffee is being discussed in relation to the cities. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when you mention 'three cities' without explicitly naming them in a way that flows naturally. Improving the use of linking words to connect specific data points would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe trends like 'upward trend,' 'gradual increases,' and 'decline.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'outcomes of a survey' is less precise than 'results of a survey,' and 'the number of instant coffee purchased increase' contains a tense error and awkward phrasing. You rely on fairly basic descriptive language. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to data reporting, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained stable,' or 'accounted for,' and ensure that your collocations are natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the number of instant coffee purchased increase' (subject-verb agreement and tense), 'the fresh coffee experienced a decline in city residents' (incorrect preposition/meaning), and 'the percentage of city residents bought fresh coffee steadily decline' (missing relative pronoun and tense error). While your meaning is generally understandable, these persistent errors in verb forms and sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher level of accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your score.
