Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five cities. You successfully highlighted the general trend of café visits being the most popular choice. However, the analysis is slightly mechanical, listing percentages city by city rather than synthesising the data more effectively. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping the cities by shared characteristics (e.g., cities where café visits were highest versus those where instant coffee was more prevalent) rather than describing each city in isolation. The overview is present but could be more analytical.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand' and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly forced or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'while' and 'whereas'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal structure of the body paragraphs could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to show contrast or similarity between the cities more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrates', 'outcome', 'proportion', and 'consumed'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'a few proportions of people' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'concluding at approximately around' (which is redundant). While you attempt to use varied vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited and relies on basic descriptors. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data reporting, such as 'a significant majority' or 'a marginal difference'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'graph of the individuals... had been seen' (awkward phrasing) and 'looking to the people of Brisbane' (incorrect preposition usage). Additionally, there are issues with punctuation and article usage, such as 'went to café' (missing 'a'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with precision.
