Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data, including the highest and lowest trends across the five cities. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. While you identify the highest and lowest categories, the comparison between cities is occasionally confusing, particularly in the final paragraph where the data points for Brisbane and Hobart are presented in a way that is difficult to follow. To improve, ensure that comparisons are clearly linked to the specific data points provided in the chart, and avoid vague phrasing like 'around 5% more' without clearly stating the base value. The overview is present but could be more precise in highlighting the most significant trends across all categories.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with' and 'Moving further' are used to structure the response. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the comparison between cities becomes muddled. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence clearly follows from the previous one, maintaining a consistent focus on the data being compared.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for the description of trends and percentages. There are some spelling errors, such as 'Sydeny', 'cofe', 'percenatge', and 'Adeliade', which are distracting. Additionally, the phrasing 'dine-in cafe for tea and coffee' is slightly unnatural; 'visiting a cafe' or 'dine-in coffee/tea consumption' would be more precise. To improve, work on using more sophisticated collocations related to data description, such as 'a significant proportion' or 'a marginal difference', and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate basic spelling mistakes that detract from the professional tone of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'The percentage of Hobart city was more as compared to brisbane', which should be 'The percentage in Hobart was higher compared to Brisbane'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are occasionally problematic. While the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the general meaning, they are frequent enough to limit the score. To improve, practice constructing complex sentences with accurate subordinate clauses and pay closer attention to comparative structures, ensuring that you are comparing like with like (e.g., comparing percentages with percentages).
