Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data, such as the popularity of cafes in Melbourne and Hobart and the general preference for instant coffee over fresh coffee. However, the report lacks precision. For example, the statement that instant coffee consumption was higher than fresh coffee in all cities is not fully supported by the data, and some figures are cited without clear context. The overview is present but could be more effectively synthesised to highlight the most significant trends across the five cities. To improve, ensure that all comparisons are accurate and that the key features are clearly distinguished from minor details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or inaccurate. For instance, the phrase 'on its contrary' is non-standard, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is slightly abrupt. While there is a logical progression of ideas, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the specific percentages for different cities. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey the main points. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'consequences of an survey' instead of 'results of a survey' and 'outing to grab coffee'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on repetitive phrasing like 'habit of making'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'preference', or 'consumption patterns', and avoid informal phrasing that is not suitable for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect article usage ('an survey'), subject-verb agreement ('Charts illustrating... is showing'), and punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary capitalization of 'The' in the middle of sentences. Additionally, some sentence fragments and awkward phrasing, such as 'as compare to', detract from the overall accuracy. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors would be beneficial.
