Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all five cities and the three categories (fresh coffee, instant coffee, and cafe visits). However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For example, you state that in Brisbane, 53% of people buy 'fresh coffee' twice, likely confusing it with instant coffee data. Furthermore, the overview is quite weak; it lacks a clear synthesis of the main trends, such as the general preference for cafe visits over home-brewed coffee across all cities. To improve, ensure you double-check the figures against the chart and provide a more analytical summary of the overall patterns rather than just listing statistics city by city.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'For Sydney', 'In Melbourne', 'For Brisbane'). There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas between sentences and paragraphs. The transition 'By over' at the start of the final paragraph is non-standard and confusing. To improve, try using a wider variety of transition signals such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', or 'Regarding the figures for...' to create a smoother flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely heavily on basic verbs like 'bought', 'went', and 'like'. There are also some errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'persons coffe' instead of 'people's coffee' and 'mostly people' instead of 'the majority of people'. To reach a higher band, incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'consumed', 'purchased', 'the proportion of', or 'a significant majority'. Avoid informal phrasing like 'mostly people would like to went'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with verb tenses and forms. For example, 'mostly people would like to went' should be 'most people prefer to go', and '45% of people buy instant' shifts tense inconsistently with 'bought'. Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as missing spaces before percentages (e.g., '44%of'). While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction limits the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and maintaining consistent tense usage when describing data.
